What's the copyright status of the Triple Scoop Music?

Post by pvreditor »

I have VS x8.5, which came with Triple Scoop Music. I assumed that this music was royalty-free and we could use it in our videos without copyright concerns.

I used the first song in one of my videos and it got a copyright claim after having been posted on YouTube for a few months. The song is the first one in the Triple Scoop Music list (it's the only instrumental, I think), and it is "A Whimsical Journey - Abbas Premjee." It's actually a pretty nice tune, which is why I used it. The copyright notice on YouTube says the claimant is "Muserk (Sound Recordings)."

Does anyone recall reading, seeing or hearing anywhere that this music is or is not free for us to use in videos? If it is not free to use, why would Corel bother giving it to us with a video editing package? That seems bound to cause some hard feelings.

Edit: I see that there was some recent discussion about this. Funny that discussion is from just a few days ago... I posted my video on YouTube with this music on Jan. 3, 2016, and it just now got tagged with a copyright violation. Seems like Triple Scoop music changed its policies retroactively.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting that info. I did "monetize" this video on YouTube, although with only 35 views in six months, it has earned no money. I will re-edit it with different music and re-post it.

So it seems like Triple Scoop Music is in the same category as music from the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Taylor Swift. You can use it in anything you want, as long as it is private and not used publicly. After all, how would they know if you use it privately? As soon as you use it publicly, they will reasonably want their royalties. On YouTube, you'll get a copyright claim that basically says all money earned by this video will go to the copyright claimant. That's the case whether the YouTube member monetizes the video or doesn't monetize the video. That's exactly what Triple Scoop Music has done.

I have generated a lot of content over the years, as I write professionally and have done some professional video production. I am sympathetic toward copyright holders, and have made successful claims against those who have stolen my copyrighted work. My only beef is that if music comes with editing software, it is reasonably expected by the user that there are no copyright issues. But they might as well have given us music by James Taylor or Linda Ronstadt or Nicki Minaj... I can use that privately without any problems, too.

So I will delete that video and re-post it with different music.
