When do you use chapters?

Post by CalifDude »

I am still new at VS9. I've made a few DVD's, but have not yet used the chapters. It seems to me that you would use chapters if you are creating a movie with several different pieces of video, such as several different events. I just returned from a cruise with my daughter and put together a DVD that consists only of digital pictures, with a music background and of course...the transitions. I did not use chapters.

I'm interested in expanding my horizons, so any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

I usually make a compilation video of my son for the past year. So I might have different chapters for holidays, vacation, baseball season, etc. Some buddys and I also did some novelty music videos so we chaptered each song and the out-takes. I also did a wedding video and had separate chapters for the rehearsal, getting ready, the service, reception, etc. Just some food for thought

CalifDude,
I'm in the process of making my cruise DVD. For me it works better with separate movies and there's no need to chapter one big movie. I have 7 separate movie selection on the DVD menu of the ship, 4 ports of call, chocolate buffet and diving. The only one that can benefit the chapter feature is the ship movie because it's quite long compared to the others. Maybe I could divide it into separate chapters for each area of the ship.

Regularly spaced chapter marks, e.g. auto-inserted every 5 minutes, are useful in longer material for skipping forward/backward quickly. When I use them I normally don't bother with chapter menus.

Hi CalifDude

I have made a couple of DVDs now from cruises etc - I have been really pleased with the results, and I must say that editing is the best thing to have happened to home movies - other people actually enjoy watching them, and don't have to be nailed down!!

I tend to apply chapter menus for different days, or significantly different events/topics.

Not that it matters a whole lot - when you show the thing to people it's usually like watching any DVD - you just run it from start to finish.
