Ultimate x8 "encountered an improper argument" error

Post by ShaViva »

I have ultimate x8 - working on a new project and was having issues with it not playing my project back - it would stop and I'd click play again and it would stop a couple of seconds later, click play again, it stops by itself, etc. So I thought, I'll create an mp4 or something of what I have so far and watch it that way. Clicked on the Share folder and it pops up with an "Encountered an improper argument" error box. And there's nothing in the Share folder so I can't do anything - it's a blank screen with just my project visible. Restarted my machine, tried it with no project open at all and it's the same. So I can do a project but I can't share it? Pointless!

Anyone have the same issue? Is there a fix? I'm not keen for that solution to be uninstall and then reinstall and hope for the best as I've already done that with x8 more times than I can count - and wasted days on the effort.

This is another issue after I had massive issues getting x8 to work at all - only fixed that problem (with help from the forum here) a couple of weeks ago. I'm uninstalling everything and hoping I'll get x6 back working as after my successful install of x8, x6 no longer works - no idea why as my non working x8 never affected x6. This is frustration and annoyance to the point I'm ready to ditch Corel and look for something better/more reliable. Very disappointing as I've used VS since x4.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks

I understand how frustrating this is. I recently was doing a project and got some similar error and traced it to a music file I had inserted.

I recommend you do a very simple project. Perhaps just a photo or two and a video clip. No edits, no titles, no music. If you can't share/render this simple project, then one must conclude something is wrong with the installation. If you can share this simple project, then add more complexity, testing each time for the edit/addition that is causing you problems and come back here with the details to see if we can help.

Hi

I do not think you will like this reply as I did have this problem and was unable to fix. For me it was CVSX7.
Although now the program works ok without the Improper Argument, no idea why other than the ultimate re-install windows.

I did seem to associate this with Instant Projects, so do you use those?

The web site below shows what affect it had on me and a sort of workround.

Resetting Program

Also do a search of this forum as there were several other users, only a few having this issue.

Hi ShaViva

I passed the information to Corel Support they do want to fix this problem but need your help in creating a Dump file
Also to backup your user data file, the files will be quite large, I do not have any details as to how you upload the files to Corel as yet

OK this is what you do
Run the program till you receive the error message.

1 / go to this folder
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\18.0
Create a copy of this folder (18.0) to upload to Corel. (approx. 50Mb)

2 / Open Task Manager – Processes tab – locate vstudio.exe
Right click for Create Dump File, will be saved here:-
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Temp\vstudio.DMP
The DMP is very large at 500Mb ish?

If you have a sharing site One Drive or Google Drive then upload to there to share with Corel.
I will try to find more info from Corel

Hi Trevor - thanks for passing the problem on to Corel and for the instructions on what to do.

At the moment my status is that I uninstalled the program and all the add ins and then reinstalled just the base program - which seems to work. I wasn't keen to risk adding in all the extra content even though I paid for it - that seems to be where it falls over on my machine for various reasons. I gave the base program a good work out over the weekend, using the music and video files I was trying to use when the problem occurred - and haven't recreated the error so far. It's a shame as I really like some of the special fx. I won't have time until the weekend but I will try installing the extras then - see what happens. It's an odd kind of error ... much like my last issue with x8!

On the down side, my x6 is totally broken now - I click to run it and nothing happens - much like what was happening with x8 before. I would have thought the programs were independent but since my improper argument error I haven't been able to get x6 to work. I wish I could reinstall that but I no longer have the install files as it was so long ago and I always bought digital copies. Silly me - should have made a backup!

Thanks again - I'll update here once I've had a go adding the extra content on the weekend. Cheers

PS> Thanks aljimenez for your advice too - I actually did go back to an empty project at the time and had the same error. With the base program working though, your advice did help me work out there was one file I had that was causing my play and then stop for no reason problem. Thanks

Do you still have X6 installed?
If yes replace the file MUIHelper , X6 should run,
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X6

Download file from this post.
