converting divx.avi to mpeg

Trying to create video file from an avi file which was converted from a divx.avi. VS9 give the message 'No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection'. Now what the heck does that mean?

Exactly what it says, I think, divx is highly compressed video, good quality though. To convert that to mpeg, I don't know, I have never done it or felt the need. If I'm not mistaken, Divx can fit more good quality video to a disk than mpeg2(DVD).
What is the file size of your divx clip and playing time?

size of the file is 521,445 kb
The reason I want to convert it is so that I can play it on my dvd player. I don't have a divx compatible one yet.

the size of the original divx.avi is 521,445kb
but the converted avi is 1,664,477kb
When I try to convert the divx.avi I always get the message 'out of memory'. So what I am trying now is to cut it up in 15 min sections, convert them to mpeg and then later put them together again.
