Any way to take a step back with Freehand Selection tool?
On several occasions, I accidentally double-clicked the mouse while using the Selection in tool Freehand mode. I lost all my work and had to start creating a marquee around the figure again (one that does not contrast well with the background). In such case, is there a way to go back one click and resume drawing around a figure?

Not once it's complete, no. During normal drawing you could hit the delete key to go backwards a step. Naturally this won't work in Freehand mode. But Point to Point, Edge Seeker, and Smart Edge will all work like this.

It's an easy mistake to make. I know I've done it enough!!
If you are cutting out an object you can cut it out bit by bit.
Here's what I do.
Duplicate your layer.
Start your freehand selection away from the object you want to cut out. Then go the the edge of what you want to cut out. Do several points around the edge then double click very near to your starting point. Hit delete. This will remove a section of the photo you are working. Keep doing this until you have completed your cut out. If you happen to have an oops moment then all you will have lost is the last area selected. (ie if you are cutting out a car using the freehand selection tool you should be able to cut it out using 4-5 selection/delete actions).

Aah, yes. Those suggestions will work for me. Thank you both. I wish the Magic Wand had more magic in it for subjects that have low contrast with the background, like grayscale images.

If I may pop in with another idea:
You could also use the SHIFT key to Add to your selection in sections, removing pieces from your selection with CTRL if needed, until you get an overall selection you are happy with, adding to it or removing from it piece by piece.
Each time you do it in this manner, PSP will keep track of your additions/removals when you use SHIFT and CTRL - and then you can just use Undo or Redo (and the keys CTRL+Z and CTRL+ALT+Z of course) to step through your additions/removals to your selections, piece by piece again.
Both methods would accomplish the same thing though, everyone just has their own methods they use
