Dropped Frames in Video Capture

Post by Brendon »

I am trying to capture a shot from my video camera using Video Capture 7.3. Every time I try, it drops frames from the video, making it jolty. If I capture using DV-Type 2, it says that "No frames were dropped" but when I playback the captured shot, the frames have still been dropped.

The original footage is not damaged. I can play it back through video capture and a TV without any jolting, and the camera is not the problem. I have captured other film from the same tape without this problem occuring.

:? The same story over and over, here it goes: what source material from which device via what connection to which hardware using which project settings etc.?

There could be many causes. I assume you have checked the connections. I suggest the first place to look may be the hard drive to which you are capturing. I presume you are using an ad hoc video drive and not just C: for everything. Is it DMA-enabled, does it have plenty of free space, does it need defragging or even reformatting. As you obviously don't think it necessary to give us any details about your hardware, OS, set-up etc., we can only stab in the dark.

If you phoned your doctor and said I have a headache, what is causing it, do you think he could answer? Neither can we.

Sorry. Man, I feel like such a Newb.

OS - Windows XP Home
HDD - 140GB (20BG Free)
Camera - Canon 600i
Firewire Connection
Film is on Sony Mini DV Tape (Filmed by a Different 3CCD Camcorder)
G-Force FX5600 128mb

I am capturing onto C: unfortunately, but I don't think that or my hard drive is the problem, because I haven't experienced this problem before, and it only seems to affect this section of footage. I can still capture other sections of the same tape without any problems.

This piece of footage is at the beginning of the tape, and lasts for approx. 2 mins. Could that be an issue? The tape is a recycled one... and was previously striped.

Warning Bells

Filmed by a Different 3CCD Camcorder

Tape may be damaged or may not play correctlly on the other cam

You also said:

C drive is not recommended for capturing as performance will deteriorate
Seperate drives can be formatted very quickly to restore perfromance

One last thing

Get rid of that virus!!!!!!! (See above)
It may even be your problem

To add to John's points (and please get rid of any link in your profile with a trojan)...

have you tried DV Type-1?

only 20gb left of a 140gb drive -- that is pretty full (and probably heavily fragmented) -- time for a separate HD for video only.

Is it possible the tape was initially recorded with 32khz audio (the first few minutes), then changed to 48khz audio? Or is it possible the tape speed switches from LP to SP -- and between the switch is where you are getting glithces?

Okay, I've deleted the Links.

It is possible that the tape is damaged, but I'm not so sure because the video streams seamlessly while I am capturing, but only skips when the file is played back.

I already had a harddrive purely for video... but this is a VERY large project, and I have already filled it up.

There was no switch in the tape between the audio or SP and LP... I never use LP as it ruined a previous project of mine.

I did try DV Type-1 and DV Type-2. They both produce the same glitches. However, DV Type-1 produces an error message warning about the dropped frames, whereas DV Type-2 falsely claims to have dropped 0 frames.

I should explain. The glitches are throughout the whole shot, and only last for 1/4 second every few seconds. If there was one damaged section only, I could simply cut that section of the shot.

in MSP, go File / Data Rate Analysis to check if there are really dropped frames.

It could be that your playback is having a problem -- can you playback other dv .avi's ok?

Do a web search for Raptest.exe -- it's a free utility that can tell you the speed of your HD's.

remember to disable any non-essential background tasks (virus scanner, spyware detection, etc...). Perhaps search for another free utility called Enditall -- to see if there's something running that you are unaware of...
