VSX8ProUlt-Can I isolate and separate 2 Audio input channels

Post by jowauk »

I have a CLIP recorded using a SONY Z7E camera which has TWO XLR audio inputs. Input 1 XLR is using a normal rifle style microphone picking up most of the required sound in shot. Input 2 XLR uses a radio microphone transmitter/receiver using a lapel mic to ensure the primary voice needed is collected well, even at a distance.

So the clip is recorded with both audio channels separated in the recorded/captured content.

BUT there are times when whilst shooting, the person wearing the radio mic says a few quiet words to another person, creating audio content that ideally I want to "lose".

I cannot see any features in VSX8 that allow me to isolate ONE of the TWO channels - I know that I can split audio out, but that is still ALL audio.

If VSX8 cannot do it, is there any other tools that would permit it ?

I have searched the forum but cannot see any similar Q & A to help - sorry if this has already been answered previously.

Thanks for any help - AGAIN :)

Not tried it but you can split the audio. (as you have done) Use Share to render an independent audio file and then load the file into Audacity and split the audio tracks that way.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for that. I have not used Audacity and don't have it but I would be happy to get it if it can do it.

So the steps would be

1 - original clip has 2 audio tracks and the video track
2 - select clip and split Audio in timeline
3 - use SHARE to create a separate Audio clip file (which I assume would also need to contain 2 Audio tracks
4 - take the shared audio file into Audacity - it WILL see the 2 tracks
5 - where I want to I can mute parts of TRACK 2 which contains the lapel mic content I want to "lose"
6 - resulting file can then be brought BACK into VSX8 and synced to the original VIDEO element of the original clip ?
7 - if all of that works I can probably achieve what I need to do - shame that VSX8 doesn't "see" the tracks separately isn't it - can't help but thinking that others need this type of audio patchwork when using combined sound collection using BOTH boom mics and lapel mics - lapel mics can be intrusive and some of what is said in such situations simply CANNOT be allowed to find itself into final work.

Are you happy Audacity will do what is described above ? If so I am on my way to the online shops :)

Thanks for responding - happy to hear about any other Audacity style tools before I conclude a purchase.

Jow, export the sound as WAV.
Import to freeware audacity
then split to mono
Save each as LAPEL, OTHER
and import them back to VS
Continue there.

Audacity is FREE!!!! Just search and download. There is a .pfd file of instructions as well.
The Audio split separates the stereo file and you split into two mono files in Audacity as asik1 explains. Then you reintroduce the two files into VideoStudio. You then drag the two audio files into two sound tracks and manipulate in the normal way.

Many thanks to you both - I will be trying your suggestions over the weekend and will confirm solved once I succeed. Shame VSX8 doesnt allow channel separation as that would solve it cleanly and without any concerns for out-of-sync sound via having to merge back the new tracks.

Much appreciated guys(or gals)
