Problem with dual layer DVD writer?

Post by Barkman »

Hi All,

I had the problem that the MF4 lancher wouldn't start - hang completely - so I had to reset my comp. When I started MF4 manually (not via Launcher) the same happened when I went from preview to the burn screen - complete hang.

I didn't get any solution, but it finally occured to me that the problem should be in initialising the burner(s), which Launcher does on startup and MF4 before entering the burnscreen. And it did!

I have now disabled both burners in my system, and both Launcher and MF4 work! However, this is ofcourse not the neatest solution. And besides that, MF3 didn't have any problem with these two writers. So, is there a known problem with any of my two writers?
- NEC DVD RW ND-3540A (dual layer)
- AOPEN DVD 1648/AAP

I have MF4 installed with the latest updates (also the august one) and patches.

Thanks, Wiebe

Dual layer burning problem

Post by bryave »

Once you have the latest update patch for MF4, I guess your Dual Layer DVD writer won't have problems at all. Just try running 1 burning software only, as it affects and conflicts using resources. ^_^

Install updates

Post by Barkman »

Hi,

I have installed these updates, like I wrote. Doesn't work. Removed Nero, doesn't matter, got no other drivers/programs accessing my DVD writers. The only thing that works is disabling the writers, nothing else at this moment.

clean reinstall

Post by bryave »

Why not try reinstalling your MF4. Try to have clean reinstallation by deleting first registry entries, program folders, temp folders, and install folders before installing it again. Try to remove first the program from the Add/remove in control panel before deleting. This is to make your MovieFactory to better recognize your burners and solve hanging problems with your program. ^_^

try updating the firwmare. You might also want to try uninstalling Ulead Data-Add 2.0 in the add/remove programs because its a Ulead program that attaches to your burner.

Maybe single and double layer don't match?

Post by Barkman »

I have reinstalled MF4, by the book, removed all reg entries en software. The dual layer DVD writer is brandnew, so it doesn't seem to be firmware. The single layer I also have worked fine with MF3.
I haven't installed the Data-add feature because of the comments here.

Could it be that MF4 can't handle a single and double layer writer in one system?

>>The dual layer DVD writer is brandnew.
Did you assign the drives correctly manually setting the jumper on the rear
of the drive? one drive for "Master" & the other for "Slave". Both connected
to the "Secondary" Port from the controller.
Both drives should be DMA2 in Xp.
(Make sure both drives are also powered on and not a faulty power connector).

I would try to run the program with only one of the burners and not the
new one (first). Or vice versa.

Make sure to set the ID on the rear of the unit to "MASTER" for a single drive.
"Master & Secondary" for 2 drives.

I've just bought the same drive, and wasted two blank dual layer discs by trying to burn a long video to them - but I hadn't installed the update! arrgh.

Anyway, I've not bought anymore dual layer discs since, but I will do a re-install first so that MF4 detects them from the outset.

One other thing, windows doesn't seem to recognise dual layer discs either, usually if I put a blank dvd a drive it open an empty folder, but with a dual layer disc it does nothing, if I try to open it from My Computer I get an error.

Does this matter, as long as MF4 can use them for video and data archiving?
