No longer able to create transport streams

Post by Joe Linn »

I have been successfully using the HD plugin to edit video from the JVC GR-HD1 high definition camcorder and copy it back to the camera. Now I am considering getting the Sony HDR HC1 high definition camcorder. Before I do that, I want to make sure I can edit the files with MSP and copy them to DVHS tape.

I have downloaded some files people have shot with the Sony camera, but I am unable to create a transport stream that is acceptable to the DHVS deck. I have followed the tutorial to the letter. The tutorial says that when you do "create/video file" with a type of MPEG files, there should be a variety of templates available including transport streams and program streams. When I do that, the only templates shown are NTSC DVD, PAL DVD, NTSC VCD, and NTSC VCD. How can I get the additional templates?

I am able to create HD video with a file name that ends .m2t, but when I select "info" for the files I have created, it says file format is "MPEG 2" rather than "MPEG-2 (transport stream)." How can I create a transport stream? That is what I need for the DVHS deck.

ADDITIONAL INFO: I have just gone back and worked with one of the files I created from the JVC GR-HD1 camcorder. I had been successfully working with this camera before. I discovered that I am no longer able to create transport streams when I edit video from this camera. This had been working before. I'm wondering if I have somehow goofed up one of my settings. When I create a new project, I select a project template of "HDV 720p" which is what I have always used. I copy video to the timeline. I write it out to disk by selecting "file" "create" "video file." For "save as type" I select "MPEG file (*.mpg, *.m2t)." As I mentioned earlier, there isn't an appropriate template to select, but when I look at the save options, it says 1280 x 720 with the correct data rate. I give it a file name that ends .m2t but when I look at the attributes of the file once it has been created, it says "MPEG 2" rather than "MPEG 2 (transport stream)" which is how the files I had previously created look. When I select "file" "export" "DV recording" and try to write the newly created file back to the JVC camcorder, I get a message that the file is not a transport stream. The previously created files work fine.

What might have changed that no longer allows me to create transport streams? I am running MSP 7.20.1006 and HD plugin 2.0. I am hoping that if I fix the problem with the JVC files that had been working, it will also take care of the problem with the Sony files.

Thanks!

I have one more piece of information to describe my problem. When I use the utility HDTVtoMPEG2 to examine the files I had created previously, under channel it shows "NONAME 0.1." Those files are valid transport streams that can be written back to the camera. When I use the same utility to examine the files I have created recently, the channel field is blank.

What could have gone wrong? Please help.

Thanks!

I think I have found a work-around. I use "file" "create" "video file" and create an .mpg file. I then use "file" "convert" "video file" and that allows me to convert it to a transport stream.

Is that the best way to do it, or should I be able to create the transport stream directly?

Thanks

Could someone please check to see what templates you have available when you do "create" "video file" for high definition and select "MPEG"? Do you just see "NTSC DVD, PAL DVD, NTSC VCD, and NTSC VCD" or do you see the whole list that is shown in the tutorial and the documentation including high definition transport streams? I'd really like to know if I have a problem and should be able to render the transport streams directly the way it is documented, or if what I am doing is the way the product works: to render MPEG then convert to transport stream.

I'd really appreciate any replies..

Thanks

Joe,
Roxio software has been known to conflict with Ulead software, I'm grabbing at straws but maybe that HDTV to MPEG2 utility is doing the same. The tutorial at Ulead's site for HD workflow shows the new HD templates included with all the others.

Hi Joe

I used to have transport stream options, now I only see the basics as you describe, I don't know if it's a result of SP3 after the HD plugin or another issue which I can't discuss (Sorry, NDA).

I haven't sent any edits back to my FX/1 recently, however I used transport streams when I did which were available from the templates.

I suggest a reinstall of MSPro 7 & HD 2.0 in your case, if you had the transport stream options before?

I suggest you also delete these folders in before the reinstall:

Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead Media Studio Pro 7.0

Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead Media Studio Pro 7.0

Good Luck

What service pack level should I use? Or should I just install the base with no service pack?

Thanks

Joe

You mentioned SP2 + HD 2.0, that's OK, SP3 after if you wish

Joe,

I have MSP7 SP3 with HDV plugin 2.0 installed, and I do get the long list of templates when I say Create/Video file.. and select MPEG as the output file type, including "HDV 1080 - 60i (Transport Stream)".

Unfortunately, the m2t files that it produces do not export successfully to my HDR-HC1 - the tape spins but there's no timecode and no video visible on the cam's monitor, and apparently nothing recorded. After poking at it a while I conclude that the m2t is probably not a valid transport stream, and that it suggests a problem with MSP7.

See my post under Anybody able to Export HDV...

----------------

As for what version to use, I found that with just the base download of MSP7 installed (along with the HD plugin 2.0) the Video Capture would not even launch, it was terminated by windows before it could even paint its window - I had to install SP3. (It appears that the base download is now SP2).
