That would be my probable conclusion. I can't be 100%, though, that it is due to SP3. As I say, I very rarely drag and drop from File Explorer and never directly from the desktop. And when I drag and drop from File Explorer it is just about always relating to a question on this forum. I am not even sure I have done this with X9, though think I may have not long after it was released (i.e. before SP2 at least). And I certainly had no trouble doing that in the past. So yes, the fickle finger of fate does indeed seem to be pointing at SP3.
Old Friend wrote:"...Cannot create a file when that file already exists!"
That message suggests to me that in fact part of VS was still running in the background when you tried to install SP3. I know you said you closed VS before installing it. However, I have often found that when I try to open VS again, it will not open. Then I find that videostudio.exe is still running when I open Task Manager and look at Background Processes. I have to kill it there before it will reopen.

So all I can suggest is to either look at your own Task Manager, or else shut down your computer, then reopen it. Then try installing the patch again...

To Old Friend: Try opening Task Manager (Ctr/Alt/Del), if you find VideoStudio listed under Processes, highlight it and click End Process. I don't remember specifically if I have done that with VideoStudio, but it has solved the problem you described for others of my programs. If that's what you find, and you do not have another shortcut to use, go into Program Files and find vstudio.exe, right click on it and send a shortcut to your desktop.

Unless senility has warped my memory, I have been dragging video and image files with any extension, from as many as 3 hard drives, into the timeline of VideoStudio since it was Ulead 8, and yesterday when I imported into the library "experimentally" it was the first time - so I'm sure you can understand there will be a learning curve for me to do that every time from now on. BTW, I experienced such ignorance on the part of Technical Service during that "problem with installing the $14.95 upgrade," I am preparing a file to mail (USPS) to the President of Corel. Somebody within the Corel executive department needs to know that they do not have a Technical Service Department, so they either need to train some personnel or quit insulting us with the little advisory popups that tell us to contact Technical Service. Over the years, I have become grateful to God for you guys who actually care and want to assist - we would really be out in the cold without you.

Hi Ken. Thank you very much for your helpful, timely advice. Since I could not run VS to install the patch, I searched through this thread and found the post with a link to Corel's X9 page for the Patch 3. I downloaded it to my drive, ran the patch installer, and, to my utter amazement, it completed successfully and now VS runs again! Plus, Patch #3 is now installed. I didn't even have to enter the serial number, or anything else. You and the other support people on this forum are absolutely brilliant! Thank you, Ken! God bless you! :D

Well, I had already done that at least 5 times but, it never did alter the Shortcut. My Windows 7 Pro system could not find a path to "vstudio.exe" for X9, anywhere, even though I gave it one. LOL.

Thank you for your suggestion. I couldn't find any running process for VideoStudio. I simply "Shutdown" my system, started it up again, then I did steps which I outlined in this post. I'm happy again that VS is running again but, I'm certainly not happy about the way Corel does this sort of thing. It should have worked flawlessly the 1st time I tried it, following their instructions.

Ken Berry wrote:I assume that you were initially talking about dragging and dropping a video file from Windows File Explorer onto the timeline. That should still work, but is not the preferred way of doing things with VS.
OK it's not your preferred way of working but it is the way that some of us have worked with VS since X4 as it is very efficient and effective. Hence if Corel does not fix this major bug introduced by SP3 then I'll be reinstalling X9 with SP2 and staying clear of SP3 and X10/XX if they do support dropping a video file from Windows File Explorer onto the timeline.

A SP is not supposed to break major functionality and force users to change their workflow. Corel QA should have identified this major bug but did not. Furthermore there was no readme saying the SP3 would break this major functionality.

Hi Guys

I have passed this information to Corel, not sure if anyone has previously reported the problem.

For me dragging any files, Video, Images or audio from Windows Explorer to the timeline crashes the program
Dragging to the library seems ok, although have not tried with all types of file.

Hi, the crash when DnD is reported as Bug 1480, and I've included RobertOZ's crash dump with the bug. Investigating, and will advise when we have fix or workaround.

If anyone here with W8.1 or W10 observes this crash, please confirm.

Thanks
Nick.

Running VS X9 with SP9 installed on W7 and W8.1. I have no problems dragging media files via Windows Explorer to Storyboard but the program crashes when I drag the same media to the timeline.

I'm also seeing the issue, if they need additionally crash dumps I'm willing to provide them.

Also, apologies to the mod team for posting to the forum without searching for a thread about this issue. (The 8 sticky threads made the forum appear inactive at first glance :))

For me, dragging the media files to the storyboard does not crash VS. I can then switch to the Timeline and all is Ok.

I'm working with W7 32bit and CVS X9 SP3. My CVS also chrashes when I dragging the media files to the storyboard, also when dragging directly to the Timeline, in both times: CVS X9 SP3 crashes
Great *** !!
Only when I'm using the "normal file-import-dialog" I can import a new media-file. That is in function.
I'm using "VIDEOSTUDIO" since 2005: using since Ulead 5+6+7 -->> COREL VIDEO STUDIO 10+11+12+14+15+17+19+19.5+20 WIN 10

Tried both an audio file and a file from Triple Scoop - no problems as yet. SP3 loaded.
Also tried Scorefitter and this worked OK.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.
