question about D drive

Post by agoodphoto »

I have all ways backed up my photographs to a CD from Photoshop Elements. I have a problem now. I have no D drive in Elements or is it my computer? I don't know what happened to it. I had tried to then use Corel Paintshop but can not find a way to burn the photos to a CD/DVD. Can someone help?

This is not really a paintshop pro problem. Your DVD drive is missing. I suspect it happened when you upgraded to windows 10.

Unfortunately, like a lot of things that are not supposed to happen, there is no one size fits all answer.

you just need to google and see what works.

If your CD drive is missing under My PC / My Computer then it may be that your CD drive has failed. They do not last forever and you may need to get it replaced.

As for backing up files on CD - yes it was recommended at one stage and suggestions given that they would last many years as CDs were a stable format.
However this can vary and besides CDs take up a lot of room. I started doing that and after getting up to a couple of hundred CDs/ DVDs found that it was more economical to back them up to external hard disk drives and with the decreases in prices of these it is easier to do that and also have 1 or two backup drives which take up far less space.

Cost wise a DVD will hold about 4 Gb and cost about 50 c or about 12 cents / Gb while you can get 2000 Gb hard disk drives for about $150 or about 9 c / Gb.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

What's a CD? None of my new computers even have one. Memory sticks seems to be the answer.

It may have failed. but it's not an uncommon problem for them to disappear when upgrading to Win 10. A lot of people have been out and bought new drives... I am of course assuming that the OP has upgraded to win 10 and not just bought a new computer.

You're buying your blank media in the wrong place. Not the place for a discussion on this but there are huge advantages to backing up to optical media especially in the days of ransom ware. It's horses for courses. But i can make many usage cases for optical media.

Are your new computers laptops or towers? I don't think most laptops have had CD/DVD drives/burners for some time. Even if not necessarily the best choice for bulk storage they are definitely useful for those who like to make DVD collections of videos they take, etc. and aren't into Bluray yet. :-)

My new computers are all laptops. My comment was meant to be taken lightly. But for those who are too serious for my tastes I'll just point out that the CD's capacity fall way short for many users. Mine included. Like the floppy disc, cassette and 8 track my guess is that the sooner you move to other options the better.

Of course I agree if we're talking storage, and DVD and even Bluray are insufficient on a cost/gb basis compared to portable storage for archiving purposes. :-) I was just pointing out that there are still specific uses for disc media. Heck, I'd bet some people still have CD players that only play regular music CD's in CDA format. It wasn't that long ago that I was transcribing vinyl to CD for customers, as well as VHS and camcorder and other video to DVD. I still do some of the latter. :-)

JoeB I'm 'old' enough to admit to using a cassette to load my first computer. Then I upgraded to 5 1/4 floppies. (How about punch cards. Yeah I used them to). But I can hear all those using SSD's laughing at us now.
My point being that the end is coming, like all technology, for CD/DVD's. Anyone currently using them had better be thinking about future storage.

Flagpole I'm so very sorry for wasting your time. If the OP finds that their CD drive is at fault then they will simply have to figure it out for themselves.
