I'm trying to get VS to open files automatically in Corel VS X6 pro to open file types like .avi and mpg4. But when I get into the file associations window in windows 10 it refuses to find video studio. It finds every other program I have on my computer but not VS.
What I'm trying to do is find out why VS won't open any of my video files on this new computer that I'm trying out before I bring it back to Besy Buy, (which I will probably do).
Anyway, has anyone else had probems with this? It won't find the program even when I click "More" and I come to a point where it won't find VS at all. It finds Adobe products easy enough...without even trying, but it won't find VS.
I right clicked VS and selected "Open FIle Location" and it found it that way. The path was Windows(C)>Program Date>Microsoft>Windows>Start Menu>Programs>Corel Video Studio Pro X6. It's installed on this new machine because I opened it and have been trying to use it (to no avail) so I know it's installed.
However, I'm trying to associate file formats to it to see if VS isn't broken for some reason because right now it doesn't work at all since it won't open any files.
Anyone know of any issues with windows 10 and VS?

Re: Windows 10 not recognizing Corel VS x6 pro
No problems for me with my Windows 10. I have VS X6, X7, X8 and X9 on it. In File Associations, .vsp project files are associated with VS, though will normally open the most recently installed version of the program (in this case X9). As for other video formats, while none of them are currently associated with VS, I have no trouble finding the various version of VS which are listed when I choose Change Program...
More generally, while some users have reported problems of compatibility between X6 (and X7) and earlier versions with Win 10, I must be one of the lucky ones who don't have such problems. Mind you, I only keep X6 and X7 on my computer to help out with questions like this one. These days I only use X8 or more regularly X9 for my day to day editing.
I should probably also add that most of us 'old timers' here don't try to open VS by clicking on particular video file types in Windows Explorer, though it should work. I understand, however, that you were doing this because of your other problems with X6. All I can suggest in the latter regard would be to do a complete reinstall of X6...

Re: Windows 10 not recognizing Corel VS x6 pro
IN general you do not associate video files (such avi or mpg files) with Video Studio since most users add video files to the project, you do not open them. Most of use use the "open" option to open the project file and that is the method you should be using.rkstudio wrote:I'm trying to get VS to open files automatically in Corel VS X6 pro to open file types like .avi and mpg4. That is certainly a strange location for your VS X8 application. Did you deliberately set it up that way and why?
I doubt very much that BestBuy will take that VS X6 back; after all it is 4 years old and versions ago.

Re: Windows 10 not recognizing Corel VS x6 pro
Hello Canuck,
Just to start off, I'm not bringing VS back..I'm bringing the computer back since I found out my other computer with windows 8. It's only $55 to fix so I think I'll get that one back and get a refund for this one. I like the older one better anyway.
As far as opening files in VS, I was told in these forums a long time ago that you should go to file>import>insert file to library or to timeline. So that's the way I have been doing it.
What I have been doing is File>New Project....Then Insert Media file to timeline (or library), then Insert video. So your saying it should be done differently?
Also, what do you mean by the "open" option? Is that "Open Project"? I dont' mean to be so picky, but I noticed that you have to be exact if the program is going to work.
The more I look into it, the more puzzled I get. There is NO open option. There is a Open Project option but that's it. from that option, it just opens .vsp files. I really need to know how to go about getting a video from my camera or phone to my timeline or library so I can open it and edit it. It doesn't seem like this should be so difficult. I really and truely don't understand VS even though I've had it for years. I have never gotten a definitive answer about how to get a video into VS properly. THis is totally and absolutely FRUSTRATING!!!
For some unknown reason, some videos are inserting fine and most of the others not at all even though there's nothing different about them. They're all mp4's.

Re: Windows 10 not recognizing Corel VS x6 pro
Hello Ken,
So I won't associate the file types to VS. You can't do that with window 10 anyway. I guess they took away that option. The option for associating file types is there, it just does'nt work. At least for VS anyway, since windows 10 can't find VS. So I'll forget that.
So maybe I've been doing it all wrong all these years. Here's what I do to begin with. I shoot a video, then I transfer the video to a file on my computer. It saves as an MP4, or MPEG4. Then I go to VS, then FIle>Insert media to timeline. Or I select Insert media to library. Then I can work with it. In a perfect world that's what WAS working until something went wrong with something. I was actually getting better results with this in Windows Vista than I am with windows 10! And even in vista, only about 10 percent of them were opening in VS. None of them are opening in windows 10. Out of about 100 videos, NONE of them are opening. For one thing, I just noticed this new problem. When I mouse over a video thumbnail, on the little list it says, "Availability: offline". Is that normal??? I"ve only seen that in windows 10 not vista, not window 8, nowhere else.
I sure hope no one else is having this many problems with VS and windows 10. It's driving me crazy!

That's what I do to, and it works. I just don't know what is going wrong for you.rkstudio wrote:So maybe I've been doing it all wrong all these years. Here's what I do to begin with. One of the problems is that you seem to think that all mpeg-4/mp4 files are much the same. That is not the case. Different codecs are used to produce them for different cameras. My GoPro clips call themselves mp4 but they are produced using the H.264 AVCHD codec. Other cameras use different codecs. That's one of the reasons why we need to know the Properties of your problem clips. (Right click on a clip in the timeline or library window and select Properties.)
This problem has gotten worse in the past year or so with SmartPhone video clips. Many of them use mp4 (some use .mov with mp4 properties!!) but they use slightly different properties from the standard ones VS can deal with. The most common difference these days is that smartphones use variable frame rates instead of ones VS can recognise, which would be 25 or 50 fps for PAL or 30/60 fps for NTSC. So when faced with a clip which has used, say, 27, or 22 fps, VS has difficulty playing it, and may crash or at best refuse to play it and give a "file format mismatch" error message.
In those cases, we tell users either to set their phone to use a fixed standard frame rate if the phone menu will allow it. If not, then we suggest they use a third party video conversion program to convert the clip to another mp4 format but one using a standard frame rate. That seems to work in most cases.
Given that you are using X6, which is now an "old" program which came out well before these very modern smartphones or new mp4 formats, it could be that X6 just isn't made to work with the new formats... even when they are calling themselves by the old familiar name of mp4.

It's also most likely that the new computer has a limited number of codecs installed, so won't play many file types.

Re: Windows 10 not recognizing Corel VS x6 pro
Hi
Just a few comments.
1 / I always run Video Studio from the desktop Icon or Start Menu – Programs.
2 / Once the program is running I use the menu – File - Open Project to open existing Video Studio Projects VSP’s
3 / In addition at the bottom of the File list are 4 recently used projects, this can be used I guess as a quick launch, this option gets quite a bit of use.
4 / To add Video or Images/ Audio I right click the timeline for one of the Import options, then browse my pc for the correct file.
5 / To add to the library I normally right click for Import Digital Media however the Open Folder option at the top can be used.
6 / Clips can be dragged from the library to timelines but right click gives the option to “Insert To”, that is my preferred method.
7 / Windows Explorer can be used to associate files to launch the program and indeed insert the file to the timeline, I never use this option other than association to the VSP file which is done when installing the program.
It is very rare that I open a Video Studio Document (VSP) by double clicking in Windows Explorer, I always run the program first.

It's time to upgrade. Too much has changed.
