Culling JPG/RAW pairs?

Post by Dogberry »

Can AfterShot (I have 2 but will get a later version if need be) treat pairs of JPG/RAW images as a single entity in the thumbnail view, the way PaintShop Pro can? For initial culling of a large number of photos, that would be very helpful, as I could skim through and flag Rejects, then just delete them and get both files in one pass. Yes, they sort side-by-side, and yes, I can select the pairs manually and do the same thing, but having to select them together manually takes an extra step, and I have to be careful to make sure I select the matching pair, and not a JPG of one with the RAW of an adjacent one. It's just a little clumsier. To have them display as a single thumbnail, with flagging actions working on both simultaneously, would really speed up that first pass of culling, especially in a folder containing thousands of shots.

I've searched the menus & preferences and also the help file, but it doesn't look as if such an option exists (yet). Have I missed it?

Thanks.

it has been a longstanding request to re-introduce a working buddy-file management this since the bibble 5 days.

before i tell you my workaround, a quick question to think about: usually keeping the JPGs in sync with the RAWs is not really necessary. well, because if you are going to work on the RAWs anyway, why bother with the JPGs?

workaround:
split JPGs and RAWs into separate folders.
cull one of the folders with stars or labels - do not use the ASP-only Flag/Reject tag.
select all, rightclick thumb, XMP -> write regular xmp files
go to the folder and move the regular xmp files to the other folder
if you haven't changed any settings on the other files before your culling should immediately show up.
otherwise try "Merge External Metadata" from the rightclick menu section "Settings"

caveats:
subsequent changes using "Merge External Metadata" might lead to hiccups and losses in the settings (not the files themselves, but still annoying).
does not work well with the catalogs.
Bibble since 2004. Aftershot until 2020. From then on darktable.
