Hi Guys,
Thought you might appreciate pocket definitions for Linear and Non-Linear Editing.
Linear Editing is the process of copying shots/scenes from one video to another. Usually in the sequence that they were recorded, but sophisticated Edit controllers can now schedule the cut scenes in a prior selected order. Time coding makes this process more accurate too, and cuts can be made to 2-3 frame accuracy. Professional equipment also allows a number of source VCRs to be controlled at the same time for merging scenes, adding transitions, titles and overlays etc. The finished recording is second generation, so there is degradation... and the sound track has to be carefully managed if the final video is to look and sound good. All this is done in real-time and viewed on the monitors as it is happening... One error can mean starting the edit all over again..
Non-Linear or Off-line editing is editing video that has been imported or captured to a computer mass storage device (Hard drive)... The data is stored in digitised form, so can be manipulated using random virtual access to construct scenes and assemble them in any order. Enhancements, effects, titles, overlays, sound over and more, can all be added during the process, and without the pressures that apply to real-time editing techniques... In fact all sorts of changes can be made in this more benign off-line environment... and to the complete satisfaction of the editor before it is put back to tape or DVD disk. Analog tapes will degrade a little when the the video is recorded back, but Digital video suffers virtually no degradation at all.
Linear editing is rapidly becoming obsolete as video standards and capture hardware get better. HD is probably as good a picture quality as the old 35mm movie film... And yes... UVS is an off-line or non-linear editing program..
Best wishes all
George
