Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
I have tried VS before with video taken from a HD camcorder and in the edit screen on VS, it looks perfect. Looks nice and big and the size of the edit window.
I am a new smartphone user and a new android phone (galaxy note 5) -- and videos taken with that, even in the highest resolution -- with two different camera apps -- show up in a much smaller frame in VS's edit window. This makes taking videos with the cell phone useless for edit purposes. There's gotta be a catch! PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

Hi 999, google say
"The Note 5's rear camera shoots 4K video at 30 frames per second and 1080p video at 60 frames"
So I'm guessing you don't use VS correctly or your 5
Do you shoot horizontally ?

Thanks a lot for holding my hand in this.
Does it matter if I shoot horizontally or vertically?

Re: Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
Yes
All video is recorded in Landscape - horizontally
Video Editors expect a landscape aspect 1920 x 1080 for hd, at worst editors will crash when trying to edit these videos.
If you record in portrait then the video will be 1080 x 1920, sitting in the middle with borders left and right, wasting 2 thirds of the screen area.
Then there is your TV or PC screen also in landscape, we would not consider turning those through 90 degrees.
Go to F6 Preferences and change the background colour from black, that will show the actual frame size.
If your video is portrait then you will have coloured borders left and right.
Recording in portrait is why you are seeing a smaller video.

THanks a lot Trevor - you're a life saver - let me give it a try...
Re: Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
Trevor
I recorded horizontally.
It still shows up as a small strip (less than 1/3 at the center) but funny enough it's rotated side ways -- so it's playing a horizontal video vertically! But problem persists as that the video just fills 1/3 of the edit window. Thanks if you have any other ideas.

if you double click on the video in the timeline the options panel will open - in the top left corner of that you will see to little icons - one rotating anti-clockwise the other rotating clockwise - click on the appropriate one to get your video correctly oriented. to get a good fit of the video in the preview you must make sure that your project properties are the same as your video properties

Re: Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
Hi
It does appear that the aspect details recorded by the phone are not being seen correctly by Video Studio. Does the video play correctly via Windows Media Player?
I do not know if you can change the aspect ratio settings within the files properties?
Using Video Studio.
First go to Preferences – change background colour to anything but black, now the actual video frame will be seen as a colour panel.
Change the Project Properties to use AVCHD 1920 x 1080, will do for a start.
Add your video to the timeline, if asked to change project properties – no--
Right click the video and choose properties, what are they?
As Brians instruction, double click and rotate video.
Now choose Attributes tab—Distort
Right click preview screen for Fit to screen.
Not sure what effect the combination of rotate and fit to screen has on the video.
You may have to manually resize the frame?
Can you upload a sample of that video to maybe One Drive so we can have a play with it?

Re: Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
Thanks a lot. The display got bigger yey! It was set to Mobile for some reason and "use last".
What should it be ?
Should I go AVCHD 1920-1080-60-18
or is that too high?
I shoot HD and want it for youtube for example so want good quality but pragmatic.
play back on the above setting is slow - thinking it's too high quality?
So what do you recommend under PROJECT FORMAT?
ONLINE seems to be a bit better than MOBILE
etc....
Thanks a lot

Re: Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
Hi
Project properties for most video should reflect the video properties.
I suggested 1920 x 1080 just to get a 16:9 widescreen frame.
I would assume that Mobile did in fact use the video properties, but as VS seems to be having problems with displaying the video, I simply choose a 16:9 option.
Video Studio X9 will match the project properties to the video properties, it may have done that given they were mobile.
If you changed the background color what did the frame look like, widescreen or portrait
If you gave us the properties of the video we could make a better decision as to the Project properties. Better still a sample would be useful.
The slow playback is possibly because of the video not the project properties, CVSX9 can use Smart Proxy which creates additional files, this can improve timeline playback and improves editing.
Start a new project
Add one of your video files, do you get a message to match the properties.
If yes, choose details
Copy and paste the details in the right hand panel ( video properties) to your post.

Re: Frame of video from phone is too small in Videostudio
Thanks Trevor - will do that and get back to you.
I once saw the message, "do you want to set it to video properties etc etc " and i said yes and there was a click to NEVER ASK AGAIN and i clicked it.
how do i get that back - is there an option to change that so it does ask me every time?
because the setting is : lIKE LAST TIME and if i have diff format video and it doesn't ask me if i want it set, then, it takes the last setting i assume...
Thanks

Hi
The message only appears for the first video added to the timeline.
So if you start a new project, then add the video you should get the message.
Good news that the message shows as it indicates Video Studio can read the properties and indeed set as project properties to match.

Yes you can restore that message - go to "Settings >> Preferences" and about half way down the little window which opens you will see a little box next to "Show message when inserting video clip to timeline" - click the box to get a tick in it - then OK out of the preferences and back to editing
