Hi,
We are using webp for images as part of our responsive webdesign for images together with jpeg.
I see no way to optimize the webp files and have to use a third party application to do this.
The webp converting built in Pro X8 gives very heavy weight images results.
Did we miss something or is this not possible in Pro X8? Something like "Export webp"!
Thanks & Regards,
David

Re: Can't find webp optimizing in Pro X8
Hi David,
I opened a JPG image of 336kb in PSPX8. I saved that image as a webp and it saved at 325kb. As you can see, the image was marginally smaller. I didn't apply any optimising either! If you save as a JPG you will have the opportunity to use Compression.

Here's a link to a page with Webp info and mention of several tools for doing conversions, including what appears to be a good free one:

Hi trueblue & JoeB,
Thanks for your reply and the link! Reading it now!
What I do now Is optimize the jpg in Paintshop Pro X8 and then convert it strait in this free converter/optimizer to webp:
http://www.romeolight.com/products/webpconv/
You will notice the big difference (50 to 80 %) in size compare to the steps you describe. The only problem I encounter is that despite the fact
that it is a genuine webp file that works in all browsers that support webp you can't open the webp file in Paintshop after optimizing in the converter (not that it's necessary, but weird).
So what you describe is true, but I would try the converter to experience what I mean If you like it!
Paintshop Pro X8 gives non optimized webp images that have just a little smaller file size then jpg.
Regards,
David

Re: Can't find webp optimizing in Pro X8
Optimising the jpeg then converting to WebP does not sound like the best way of doing it. Transcoding between lossy formats is never going to be the best way. to my mind your' best bet is to save your jpegs as you are, also save a lossless such as png, (or very high quality jpeg, maybe) and then convert to a lossy.
the lossy jpeg will introduce artefacts that the WebP will have to reproduce, it knows no better whether an artefact was supposed to be there or is part of the compression.

Re: Can't find webp optimizing in Pro X8
Hi flagpole,
Thanks for the tip!
Did not notice any important artifacts in my results and to be sure I searched in Google for some more tips and found this:
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/webp-guide/
That is exactly the way I do it except for the optimizing in between, besides Paintshop Pro X8 on my Windows laptop I also have jpgMini on my iMac.
But it works with Paintshop jpg optimizing as well of course with very gentle settings of 35.
I think you have a point when it is done with a poor optimizer and I used it for huge background images in different srcset sizes for a website with a pixel raster on top so quality is not so important!
Regards,
David

Re: Can't find webp optimizing in Pro X8
When i say artefacts I'm not necessarily referring to things you can see. I'm simply talking about the necessary consequences of using a lossy image compression technique.
You are optimising, (as in minimizing the file size whilst reaching the minimum acceptable quality,) the images so you obviously think it makes sense to do with the jpeg. But you are not optimising the WebP. That is all.
