Problem with highlight recovery and blemish clone circles

Post by rainer042 »

Hello,

recently I started working with ASP3. I discovered three problems that I hope can be fixed soon:

1. Problem in new highlight recovery
Because I just had just finished a photo needing highlight recovery using ASP2 I created a copy of this master file and looked at the result in ASP3. In ASP2 everything was ok. The new algorithm in ASP3 however seems to be problematic for some photos, creating a pink tint where white light was before the correction. Here is the sample image I talked about. One jpg was created in ASP2 the copy of this master version was converted to jpg in ASP3 no settings were changed.

Here is the ASP2 jpg:

And here is the same photo with same settings processed with ASP3:

2. Limit one cloned eg circles
The second problem I found is a limitation that I think should be lifted. I had a photo with really much dust on a filter turning into many, many small blemishes in the photo. So I created circle clones to remove the blemishes using the new blemish remove tool. After I had created 42 circles I was told that I reached the maximal number and cannot create any more clones. Of course I needed two more :-(. Then I tried to remove one of the clone-circles near one edge of the photo to set one more near the middle. However I did not find a way to select one circle on the photo and remove this very one. In the layer dialog all clones are numbered and there you can delete any clone however there is no way to determine what number eg the circle I previously created in the left upper corner of the photo has. You cannot select and delete this very circle directly because you do not know its number. All you can do is disable one after the other in the layers dialog and watch if the one you want to delete disappears. This is very very cumbersome and should be improved.

3. Size-problem minimizing/restoring the right sidebar
A third small problem I discovered is related to the sidebars. The right sidebar containing all the tools and plugins can be minimized clicking the right arrow minimize/maximize button. If you afterwards restore this bar by pressing the same button again it is restored but to a width that is too small. Its just wide enough to see the sliders but too small to also see the numeric values for the sliders positioned right of the sliders. At least in my linux version this is true. This should also be fixed because I would like to see the numeric values as well when restoring the sidebar.

Thanks a lot
Rainer

Question regarding number 2 - the limit of 42 per layer ? could you add another layer with another 42 corrections ?

Regarding question 2:
I just tried if I could add another heal/clone layer but this is not possible since the "+Heal/Clone"-button in the layers dialog is disabled, because this photo has already one heal/clone layer. This dialog allows exactly one heal/clone layer. I could however add more "adapt settings" layers but this would of course not help in this case.

What I also tried was if ASP allows me to copy the existing heal/clone layer which astonishingly works, so afterwards I have two heal/clone layers with 84 circle clones. So probably I could delete all the circle-clones from the copied layer and add new ones.

So the question is, how ASP has been designed how it should work: Only one heal/clone layer allowed or more than one?

Good idea copying the layer - I guess its a good work around solution, but the limit on both number of heal circles and the number of heal layers doesn't make sense.

Seems likely they have reverted to the original Bibble Code - the limitation was the difference between the 'Free' and the 'Paid for' version if my memory serves me right! :?

Just for the records: I am using the paid version of ASP3 and this version also has a valid serial number.
So I guess the heal-clone layer problem is simply a bug.

I noticed the heal clone limitation a long time ago. If my memory serves me well, I even asked on this forum and the response as why do you need more. I gave up and left the dust spot removal process to GIMP. I also left the sharpening to GIMP as well, as I found their wavelet sharpen does a better job.

Well as far as possible I try to do everything in ASP. I like to use one tool as this makes it easier to change a setting later on. Since ASP offers the use of plug-ins you can also use the wavelet sharpening in ASP. As far as I know the algorithm if not even most of the code is the same like in gimp.

you can, but it is not really obvious with a lot of circles.

- drag the circle to another location.
- this will select it in the list.
- hit the trashcan icon in the layer control panel.
- gone.
Bibble since 2004. Aftershot until 2020. From then on darktable.

Thanks a lot
