Windows Explorer and Default VS
If I use Windows Explorer, locate the required video, then select "Open With" for VS it only gives the option to open with VSX8, VSX9 is not listed, even clicking on "Other Programs" still does not list VSX9 as an option. This is just an observation, as I would not normally use this method but is this normal or is there something I can change somewhere.

Re: Windows Explorer and Default VS
FWIW, I get the same thing. Open With doesn't actually specify the version number, but the icon is clearly not X9's. And when I click on it, it opens X8.
I wonder if it has something to do with Control Panel > Default Programs. When I go to Associate a File Type with a Particular Program and choose one of the video formats, and select Change Program (as I have all of them set to VLC Player as default), again only X8 appears in the More Programs list. I would need to navigate to X9 to set that. And that might then add the X9 icon to the Open With command as well.
But like you I never use this method to open a video file in VS in any case, so it is a moot question for me too...

Re: Windows Explorer and Default VS
for me Double click or right click and "Open" opens X9 - "Open With" gives the choice of X9 or X8 (I also have X7 on this laptop)

Hi Guys
For each version of video studio there is a “vstudio.exe” file.
The file association is set in registry to target one of these. Usually the last version installed takes preference.
Like Brian my X9 program launches
When installing X9 It is possible that the registry does not get updates and earlier versions may still launch, not good when opening X9 projects as the program runs (say X8) but the project does not open as its saved for X9.
Launch X9 first then double click any VSP should open ok.
I did at one time locate the registry file association details which could be edited to open any version, unfortunately not sure where they are now.
Changing the “default program” does not alter anything as the registry sees any vstudio.exe, it’s the associated string of data that’s showing the version and that does not get changed.
Simply re-installing X9 may not alter the files association, but worth a try, maybe a full install of all programs would do the job? In order of course.

Re: Windows Explorer and Default VS
I don't have VS listed at all as "open with" for videos (only video players), and why one need it there?
Do you have WORD listed as "open with" for your gif's?
VS as "opener" relevant only to vsp files.
