X8 Pro Ultimate Performance issues

Post by st_ »

Hi,

I'm facing performance issues with PSP X8 Pro:
  • When starting, after splash (which lasts for maybe 5-10 seconds), >= 30 seconds "hanging" until UI becomes responsive. This is very annoying. I did not had the problem with X4.
  • When navigating to a JPG storage folder, slow build up of image thumbnail page, all my 4 cores are heavily utilized, disk is not utilized. CPU goes instantly down when switching to edit mode (PSP)
  • even after terminating in navigator mode, X8 uses a lot of CPU for a couple of seconds
  • When viewing a JPG and switching to next, it is instantly displayed in low resolution and takes ~1 second, sometimes even longer, until full resolution appears, interestingly only in navigator tool - when opening (!) in editor (PSP itself), it instantly displays in full resolution!
  • When scrolling through folders that had been opened in the past, it is slow and thumbnails appear only after 1-3 seconds per page, when having 1000 JPGs it may takes a minute or more to get them all
  • AfterShot2 fully utilitzes neither CPU nor disk but is much faster (except first time in a folder)
  • Other tools, such as Picasa 3, also are much faster (in Picasa, I can scroll with mouse wheel through full screen images and see several images per second without noticeable delays)
Anyone else facing such issues? For thumbnail building, CPU seems to be bottleneck, isn't it possible to cache thumbs? As it seems, neither CPU nor disk is bottleneck when viewing next image, what is X8 navigator waiting for when showing images? Do I need to configure some background face recog off, disable cloud upload, or anything? Network connections might be blocked, because of firewall, but this should be ok, I think.

Any ideas?

Do you have hyper-threading enabled on your processor?

Many intel cpu's use hyper-threading. In theory hyper-threading can speed up certain applications designed for it: Paint Shop Pro most certainly isn't one of them. Hyper-threading creates virtual processors (cores) and in doing so doubles the number of processors visible to the system. Each processor is 1/2 of a real one, and Paint shop can make use of only one processor for most tasks within it. What you get is 1/2 the performance that you would otherwise get with the hyper-threading off.

The default on hyper-threaded cpus is "on." You can google how to turn it off.
