ASP Pro 3 - most annoying software I've ever used

Post by Protazy »

I trully wanted to switch from Adobe and try something new. Unfortunately for me I paid for ASP a bit to soon, will have to ask for a refund and look for alternative solutions because this software is next to impossible to use.

Have been using ASP exclusively since the relase day, and have had nothing but problems. In the begining I imported nearly 12000 photos, have started rating them, ASP crashed, reason unknown and after that I could not start the program again but in log file I could find entry related to broken record.

Ok, second go, I created another catalogue and imprted photos from one year only, edited, rated assigned keaywords, nearly ok apart from pink colour when using highlight recovery tool, increasing expousure on some photos and on one occasion graduate filter. Imported photos from another year, edit, rate, keywords, some export. Once files have been exported I've noticed that exported files are rotated, even more, in catalogue they had been rotatet as well and there is no way to rotate them back to portrait mode. Thumbnail blinks showing rotation and after that image stays in the same position as it was. Thumbnails are half cut, so instead portrait thumbnail you get horizontal one with half of protrait photo or in the worse case scenario you get white frame with not thumbnail at all.

Opening another folder with files which had been already edited, what am I seeing? Images not available, no matter what I was doing couldn't get image back until I reset all applied settings on the affected files which obviously deleted all my edits.

Now I can't even open ASP because it crashes as soon as i open it, constantly I'm seeing Aftershot has stopped working. In the log files I can find last line

Code: Select all

305680.488: Opening DB "P:/ASP Catalog 2016" 305681.92: Error - Unable to load setting created with a later version of Bibble.
Come on, seriously? There is something called open public beta before releasing new software! I own LR2 and DXO 8, not sure if any of them crashed ever, ASP is crashing or doing wierd things which then lead to crash constantly. For a little more money spent on ASP + graduate pro plugin I could've upgraded to LR6 (£59), but believed that Corel which is famous from developing graphic applications is able to release good, bug free software and I'll be free from Adobe wich I'm not great fan of. ATM I can only say that open source raw editors like RAWTherapee or Lightzone are more mature than ASP3 and are totally free!

Huge dissapointment, total waste of few days... ASP can be one of the best as it's got potential, but ASP3 definetly has been released to soon without much testing and bug fixing.

Tried the same: first importing a folder with ~21000 pictures, then (after ASPp3 crashed) I tried just browsing without importing. Crashed again.
Sorry, but this is not even beta quality; such a thing is not tolerable for a program that wants to replace LR.
If (and only if) they will explicitly post a new version that remedies the problem, I will give it another try. But as it stands now, I really don't see the point in trying workarounds for something that should work right out of the box.

I too have had crashes when importing into the library, but rather than do nothing helpful and moan on a forum, I contacted support and have sent them the files that are causing the issues so they can try and build in a more robust system for the next releases for myself and the rest of the community. Maybe you should put some effort into doing the same sort of thing.

Feel free to wait a year or two with a hope that the problem will be fixed soon, I trully believe that Corel will sort it out eariler, but I personally don't have time to wait, just want to work with the program and take photos. For now sticked with DXO and my old lightroom. Corel is reading this forum hopefully and there is line from logs which can lead them to the problem. This is not moaning, it is informing on public forum that there is something wrong with the software, potentilal customer should be aware of problems that may occur before purchase to not be fulled by advertising like "Fastest raw editor" etc, because he/she may spend more time fixing or waiting until the problem is fixed than it is worth. Informing people this is what I call help to the community, Corel may use this information or not, community hopefully will. As I said before, big release between versions like 2 to 3 should be preceeded with public beta program to eliminate all problems before the big release, not after someone has paid for it. Do you really don't see the difference? I'm developer myself, if I had said to my boss, I'll put new feature on our live system to see if it works and let our customer test it for us, I would be without job by now.

To help them? Why? Corel has really BAD reputation because it ignored suggestions of "community".

It is not opensource. They can find bugs and resolve them or not.
If not, I will buy another product.
Even lightroom in wine is more suitable, than native AftershotProX.

I have had unreliable results using Aftershot Pro 3 when importing, exporting, deleting, displaying the thumbnails and issues with the catalogue. These problems parallel the posts already out here. The most annoying has been crashes when the cr or jpg file is corrupt or missing. It just crashes. No message missing file, etc. Often times I reboot the app when something isn't working and that "fixes" the problem. I have been using Paint Shop Pro for years without a single hitch. I like features in this software but I'm afraid of losing my work product.

I'll add to this, too. Using AS3 on Debian Linux. AS3 reads in the contents of a directory and when it hits a 'corrupt' .jpg it crashes. I've narrowed down those particular files and sent them to Corel support. Thing is, those offending files can be opened in all the other editing and viewing programs I use and if they are re-saved in most of those programs, even without any editing changes, then AS3 will load and open them successfully.

Same problem here with ASP3 using Ubuntu 16.04-LTS. Opening with GIMP and resaving will allow ASP3 load the file it crashed on. The sad part is that ASP3 own saved jpg files crash with the same error.

Importing: "/home/gary/Pictures/Family/Tennessee/Izabelle-42516-DSCN3275.jpg"
TIFF Error: /home/gary/Pictures/Family/Tennessee/Izabelle-42516-DSCN3275.jpg "Not a TIFF file, bad magic number 55551 (0xd8ff)"
defaults: "DefaultRendered.xmp"
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The above file was opened with asp3 and modified by adding a watermake and resaved as jpg. I exit asp3 and restarted program, File Izabelle-42516-DSCN325.jpg caused the crash. Open program with GIMP, made no changes with GIMP, just exported the file as jpg. Exited GIMP and restart ASP3 and it now loads the file. Corel needs to fix this now, as it's a major bug which makes ASP3 useless and a waste of money.
Thanks.

I get the same log message, "Not a TIFF....bad magic number...." for each loaded and rendered file, too, but a 'bad' file caused the fault with no indication of what the problem is. After comparing two files, one 'corrupt' and one re-saved so it opens, I found major changes in the JPEG header. After doing some research on the headers I found that there are two types of headers used in JPEG files, both incompatible with each other. It appears that a re-save doesn't change the actual picture data but does rewrite the headers. I'm certainly no expert on this, and it's just a partially educated guess, but it's looking like some combination of data in the header is causing the segfault. AS3 seems to be reading a byte or two in the header that it doesn't know what to do with, so segfault.

Can you give me the link you used to upload files. The link in the bug section of the forum kept crashing yesterday and wouldn't allow me to upload anything.
Thanks.

I filed a problem report and the replies came from mycasesupport@corel.com so that's where mine got sent. I'm thinking that with the offending pics and an explanation of what's up then they will probably get to where they are supposed to go.

given this & the amount of other showstopper bugs in ASP3 and their REALLY bad customer support I requested (and got) a refund and switched to darktable last weekend.
it's free, has less (if any) bugs, has better lens correction, ... admittedly it's slower but not that much and better slow than crashing...

The same situation here. I was a little bit happy with Aftershot Pro V2.x for a while. But now I bought Aftershot Pro 3 for approx. 60€ an I cannot use this software!!!!!!!!!!
What the hell is going wrong with Corel? Did I buy a beta version?
I'm very frustrated !

An Image processing Software without the ability to handle jpeg files is a shame!

I was having this same problem with ASP 3.0.0. I finally upgraded to 3.3.0 and lo, behold, no more crashes. ASP still can't handle the files, but it shows them in the thumbnails as white X's inside a box. A great improvement!

Thank you, Corel.
