Issue re-sizing photos on overlay track VSX8

Post by randy wright »

I recently upgraded to VSX8. When I res-size a photo on the overlay track it becomes distorted. By that I mean it stretches so that the top and bottom are cut off and the part that does show looks slightly squeezed in. It looks fine as long as it is still selected with the frame around it. But when I select another track so that the selection frame disappears, that's when it distorts. I've tried things like "fit to height," and "keep aspect ratio" but nothing works. One thing I want to be clear on is that during the entire time I had VSX7 (a little over a year) this never happened. Never. I even loaded up VSX7 one more time to make sure. The photos worked perfectly. I tried every maneuver that I'd been doing with X8 but could not duplicate the problem in X7. I checked all the settings to make sure they were the same as in my X7. A lot of my work is with still images, so this is crippling for me. If I can't resolve this I'll have to go back to X7. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One thing I forgot to mention is that once in a great while a photo works correctly. But if I have to go back and re-size it again, it distorts.

Could you explain exactly how you are resizing in the overlay track, carrying out a test in VS8.5, I placed images in the overlay track, then resized them in the preview screen by grabbing a corner bottom right first, then top right and dragging it to enlarge, did this with a group of images and played back in Project mode, absolutely no distortion at all on any image

Thanks for responding. I must have gotten a "lemon" copy or something. I did exactly what you did and all were distorted. After I installed VSX8.5 I downloaded a couple of "hot fixes" which brought my version up to VSX8.606. Could those hot fixes have messed me up?

To expand a little bit on Robert's response, note that he said he expanded using the bottom right corner key point. Using any of the corner key points will expand the image evenly i.e. no distortion. But using any of the other keypoints in the middle of the four sides, will produce distortion.

I don't think you have a lemon. It's perhaps as simple as the keypoints you are using to expand the image...

Actually I went back and did exactly what he described using the corner keypoints. The image expands perfectly and looks fine after I enlarge it while the frame with the keypoints is still there. It's only after I click "project" and the frame disappears, that the image becomes distorted. I need to clarify what I mean by distorted. The shape of the rectangle that the face is contained in is not distorted. The face itself stretches so that the top of his head and the lower part of his neck is not visible, it's cut off.

screen shot one.jpg
screen shot two.jpg
These two screen shots were both taken after re-sizing the photo. One , before clicking "Project," the other, after clicking "Project."

I can report that I had same issues like that, the problem is that they were erratic and not came back in the last few weeks. Heaven knows why.

Randy, I have tried portrait and landscape images but cannot reproduce your results.

Am at a complete loss as to why this is happening to you, have you tried a reinstall of VSX8.5, could be just a glitch which may correct itself with a reinstall, you do not need to uninstall VSX7, both programs can sit happily together, but of course only one can be opened at a time.
Also make sure your graphics drivers are up to date

Well I hope you're ready for a strange story. This afternoon I was looking at the "Properties" for VSX8. In the "compatibility tab there was a check box beside which it said "Run this application in compatibility mode (for Windows 8.) I have Windows 8.1 so I checked the box. Now everything works correctly. No distortion! This leaves me with 2 questions. Why would any software program less than 2 years old not be "compatible" with Windows 8.1 by default. And why was this step not necessary in VSX7? Well anyway, it works now. I did notice that the program seems not quite as snappy as before, but the difference is barely noticeable. Thanks to you all for responding!
