After Shot Pro 2 Crashes loading Iceland File at Starup

Post by msad »

My AfterShot Pro 2 has recently stopped loading. I think the last thing I changed is upgrading to Windows 10, but not positive. I thought I had tested all my corel stuff right after upgrading. I initially had the problem with Aftershot Pro 2.3 but upgraded to 2.4 with no change in behavior. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled all of AfterShot Pro, and again no change. I have also dug into both plugin directories and manually removed all the plugin folders, with no change. I have attached a logfile, through all of these changes the logfile has always been the same. It always stops at "device: 0x[varying memory location] "Iceland". The only Iceland files on my computer a Python Libraries associated with AfterShot HDR, and Paint Shop Pro, nothing in the AfterShot Pro 2 folder.

Any help would be appreciated.

My hardware profile is:

Re: After Shot Pro 2 Crashes loading Iceland File at Starup

So this qualifies as solving my own problem. After 6 months of troubleshooting and a lot of trial and error, I can launch After Shot Pro 2 again.

Corel Support ultimately tried to tell me that I had a bad Windows 8 -> Windows 10 upgrade and I needed to install Windows 10 from scratch and rebuild my entire system. Since running Windows 10 repair showed no problems I refused. That was a good move on my part.

The ultimate problem lies with my AMD video adapter. I do not have a GPU in my laptop, and hence don't run OpenCL. However launching OpenCL was previously the last thing happening in the log file, with the cryptic "Iceland" log message. Iceland is actually the name of an AMD video device. When I realized this I disabled my AMD video adapter, and After Shot Pro 2 works again.

Its not an entire solution because it does not explain why AMD, OpenCL, and After Shot Pro don't work well together. In addition, now that I can access the Hardware Acceleration Preferences I can see that OpenCL is disabled in preferences, so why After Shot Pro tries to use OpenCL is another mystery. Regardless the software now functions again.

Hopefully this saves someone else 6 months of troubleshooting or rebuilding their computer.

My launch log file now looks like this for OpenCL:
85883.418: **** Making CLManager
85883.485: Got 2 platforms
85883.485: OpenCL is disabled in low mem mode
85883.486: platform 0x7ff99c01f180 "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc." OpenCL Version: "OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (1800.5)"

85883.486: "Could not locate any OpenCL devices"
85883.487: **** CLManager not initialized
