Object cut and paste fringe, Antialias control X7

Post by Briansdad »

Need to improve my cut and paste work flow. Sometimes when I cut an object and paste it into another image I carry with it a fringe of the background color form the original image. I try to select carefully. It seems to be the imprecise edges created by the antialias (I think?). I wondered if anyone could suggest a better technique for getting a pasted object to not give itself away by a poor boundry

You didn't mention how you are cutting/pasting. If you are using the selection tool you could try a couple different methods. You can adjust the feathering to see if that helps or once you have made the selection go to Selections -> Modify -> Contract and adjust the pixels until you are happy with the results.

Another tool you can play with is the Object Extractor that is located under the Image menu.

It would be probably best is I use a specific example. I have a project I hope to get to tomorrow or the next day. If I run into this fringe issue, I'll lost with screen shots and specifics.

By way of example only, this is not an actual project.
Image to be clipped (cut a piece to put elsewhere)

I cut an area with the object extractor. This is just a piece of the entire object
a section of the extraction
a section of the extraction
When placed on a light background the fringe, part of the dark background of the original image, is clearly visible
clip on new background
clip on new background
I'd like to be able to eliminate this effect as much as possible and still have a smooth edge/transition.

I use all of the available selection tools, depending on the job, but often get a similar result to the above.

I think the method I mentioned earlier of contracting your selection by a couple pixels will help eliminate the fringing.

Another option is to go to a dedicated plug-in like Topaz ReMask5. It's like the object extractor on steroids. ReMask5 can be used as a standalone or a plug-in with PSP.

Fringe removed, green background
Fringe removed, green background
I took your second image, resized it by 400%, then used the magic wand with RGB selected, Add mode, 30 tolerance, contiguous, Outside Alias checked, and selected the fringe, which took a number of clicks with the Wand and ended up also selecting your checkerboard background. Then went to Selections>Modify>Expand set to 3 pixels. Hit the delete key to remove the background checkerboard and the fringe. Resized to 25% to get it back to its original size. Added a raster layer behind the flower tip and painted it green. Is this what you're trying to achieve (albeit you might want a different color background)?

Sometimes the hard way is the best way! I do a lot of cutouts/contours. I find most, if not all, of the semi/automatic methods leave a lot of clean up work. To do a clean cutout I do it manually.
Freehand Selection\Point to point. Feather and smooth on either 0 or 1. Anti-anlias on.

Yes it takes time. But in the end you have full control and a very clean cut. Zoom in to 200-300% for best results.
