X8 SP2 crash on save as JPG from TIFF

Post by Trilliana »

Hello,

so far my experience, SP2 crashes on "Save As" as JPG from a TIFF image.  After some trials I guess this happens only if the setting "Use last file type for 'Save As'" is marked.

Here's what happens:
1. Load a TIFF 16-bit image to do whatever.
2. Save this image as JPG, either first saving the changes (if any) in TIFF or not.
3. Close the image.
4. Load the next TIFF image, and after some 1-3 seconds comes the crash, Windows saying PSP doesn't respond anymore.

This didn't happen with SP1, and it doesn't happen with SP2 either if using "Save a Copy As". And it doesn't matter if I actually change something or just load a TIFF and save as JPG without doing anything. It also happens in both 32-bit and 64-bit PSP versions. :x

BTW, in all these save dialogues PSP always shows TIFF as file type, even when doing several "Save As" or "Save a Copy" one after another.

What is the source of these TIFF files and how big do they tend to be? I tried to see if I could duplicate this but couldn't so curious if there's something I'm missing.

Hello,

the TIFFs come from Lightroom 4.4 and are about 19-23 MB. My workflow consists in processing the raw images in Lightroom, export them as TIFF, then process further in PSP, because there are couple of things working better than in Lightroom, plus the plugins, tune mapping etc. I've been doing this since several years now, and never had problems with it.

What I can confirm: If the option "Use last file type for 'Save As'" in the settings is unticked, empty, then PSP saves the images correctly, no crash.

I can give more details, they may or may not be relevant:
I use 2 screens, on one is the PSP Manager (or Browser or whatever it's called) opened, on the other I have the PSP Edit window. I always open the TIFFs for editing from the browser, i.e. from the thumbnail row on the bottom.

Hello,
I must come back to the subject. I just wanted to process some JPG coming from a mobile phone, and PSP X8 crashes again after "Save as" as JPG. The picture does get saved, it's again crashing after some seconds. So it seems the problem are not the TIFF, it has something to do with "Save as". IIRC there were some problems with Save/Save as described in other threads.

Just like with the TIFF, saving a copy ("Save a copy...") does work, no problem there. Maybe I should mention I use the optimization when saving as JPG (Save as /Options /Optimize).

Edited 15 minutes later:
It seems PSP crashes only when using the JPG optimization in "Save as". I did some tests, if I "Save as" JPG without using the optimization everything is OK. There is no problem using the quality slider in the "Save as " dialog either.

I don't have that happening when running the optimizer to save as jpg. I wonder if it could be a specific setting you are using in the optimize dialogue although I can't see how those few settings would be responsible for crashing.
