VideoStudio X7 Capture Preview Window is "choppy"

Post by sbudaj »

Whenever I capture video from my DV device, the capture preview window shows the video very choppy. While it does capture properly, it is a little disconcerting.

Is there something I can do to see the capture window in normal video?

Thanks.

A bit more information please!

Capture from what DV device? How are you setup, etc?

If you are indeed capturing from a DV camcorder and using Firewire, you might want to consider a small freeware program which many of us here have used. It has the advantage of allowing you to assign your own name to the captured files, instead of Corel's rather clumsy numbers/dates based naming system. It's called WinDV and can be found at http://windv.mourek.cz You capture using WinDV then simply open the captured files in VS. WinDV has its own preview window and that should run smoothly.

I am using a Sony digital Mini DV camcorder connected through firewire.

I have also tried an older Sony Digital 8 camcorder with the same results.

I have heard of the WinDV program, but just wonder why VideoStudio X7 does not display properly during capture?

It could have something to do with the revised DV/AV codec installed by Microsoft from (I think) Windows 7 onwards. There is a way of rolling back to the older "legacy" driver, which you can read about here: http://myvideoproblems.com/ProblemPages ... tureW7.htm

Note that the problem which required this rollback was complete inability to capture at all using the new DV codec. But as I say, your own problem might be related. At least it's worth a try.

Thanks. It isn't a problem of not being able to capture. It does capture properly. It just doesn't display properly in the preview window.

Has this possibly been fixed in X8 or X9?

The thing is: it was never a problem for other users so apart from the problem of not working at all, there was nothing really to be fixed. But we'll wait to see what others with more recent experience with recent versions have to say. (I personally have not taken any DV video for about 7 years...)

I am transferring all of my DV videotapes (and even non digital) video to my hard drive. I have hundreds of hours.

All of my current video is shot in HD and those files are easy to transfer.

But, it would be nice to have the preview function working for the DV tapes.

Since your captured video seems to be Ok and only the preview window is choppy then that would indicate that your graphics system is not able to keep up with the incoming video stream.

Hi sbudaj

Unfortunately not many users work with DV capture so this problem has not really been noticed
I raised this issue when beta testing X7

Yes I found it a problem, earlier versions maybe X6 do not have this problem and preview playback during capture is smooth.

Very annoying top say the least but as you find the actual captured DV-Avi is ok and plays without problems.

As Ken mentions there is another program WinDV that can transfer your dv files to the pc.

I will dig out the old camera to test X8 and X9 DV capture function, give me a little time.

Post Updated

The problem exists with CVSX7 only, I ran capture on X6, X8 and X9 all seemed ok

In fact you do not have to capture to see the problem preview screen, simply play the video.
The camcorder screen scrolls ok whilst X7 preview progresses every half second or so, giving a bad stutter.
