Need to reinstall PSP when upgrading to Windows 10?

Post by cookie1234 »

I have PSP X6 Ultimate running on Windows 8.1. Is this PSP version (and the KPT filters that came with it) compatible with Windows 10?
Or Will I need to reinstall PSP when I upgrade to Windows 10? If it does pick up PSP, Will I lose my custom settings though?

In theory, everything should work as before. From what I recall, I had no problems with most versions of PSP but there were a few programs I had to reinstall - some version of PSP may have been one of them. In my case it took a while, days, for Win 10 to settle down and perform well. You may need patience.

Well, I guess since there's no definitive answer (that I can find) re: what happens to PSP when upgrading to Windows 10,
I'll just have to copy down my custom settings. Thanx for answering.

You don't have to write them down. Save your workspace, then copy the saved workspace file to a folder you create outside of the PSP folders. Then, if you end up having to reinstall PSP you can then move that workspace file back into the correct folder and load it again.

Mmmmm. Never thought of that. Certainly is worth a try. I am more concerned, though, with losing all my custom setting and images
(presets) while working in KPT filters. I don't think there's anyway to copy all that in a separate file outside PSP
because the PSP workspace is not used when using the KPT filters. Only the end product is shown in the
workspace.

KPT filters are a separate program from PSP. Installing PSP does not install add-ons that may come with the program unless you want to install them. Installing PSP won't affect your plugins. However, installing Windows 10 can affect programs but if or whether it does or which programs it can affect is likely different for different people on different systems, so that's a risk you'll have to take.

Thanks for answering.

So if installing Windows 10 obliterates PSP and my KPT filters, would I be able to transfer my KPT filters (32-bit)
from X6 to X8 (the latter of which I intend to install). I plan to copy my custom settings in KPT just in case the worst
happens; but my main question is, Can I still use the KPT filters from X6 on X8?

When you install X8 make sure to install both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. If KPT filters worked with your X6 then that was a 32 bit version of X6, and I see no reason why they won't work with X8 32 bit version. And yes, if and only if Windows 10 causes problems with your existing KPT filters will you need to reinstall those filters and will need to know the preset settings to re-do the presets IF you have to reinstall KPT.

You do NOT "transfer" filters from one version of PSP to another! You simply point the new version of PSP that you install to the existing location of any already installed filters you have using File>Preferences>File Locations.

I think I see what you mean. And that's good news for me. Thanks!

I'm a little confused though re: Pointing to File>Preferences>File Locations. In the worst scenario,
If installing Windows 10 wipes out my PSPX6 and the KPT filters, they wouldn't be there to point to.
So do you mean downloading KPT filters from the Corel site after I install X8. Could I somehow
get the KPT filters out of PSP X6 without re-installing X6 (if it's wiped out), since I wouldn't want
2 versions of PSP on my computer or if the KPT filters available differ from those in X6.

(I didn't download X6 from the Corel site. I had bought the package at a software store. But if I remember correctly,
when I installed X6, the KPT automatically appeared with PSP on my computer.)

Thanks for your patience. I rely so heavily on those filters, I'm trying to turn this into the best scenario if
the worst happens.

Others might chime in with more info (I don't have Windows 10 installed) but as far as I know, those with problems after installing Windows 10 don't find that it "wipes out" existing programs, only that one or more existing programs don't work as they should. In other words, the Plugins folder of your X6 shouldn't just disappear. The question is whether or not, on your specific system, Windows 10 might cause issues with using either X6 and/or any of the plugins in the Plugins folder (which are, as I've said, separate programs from PSP.

However, if the matter is of vital importance to you, by all means make notes of your KPT settings just in case things go south. I wouldn't expect them to, but then I don't intend to install Windows 10 for various reasons so am not an expert on the various issues that some people (not all by any means) have experienced. :-)
