PSP won't open large files

Post by raymack »

Hi folks,
I am using Paintshop Pro x8 Ultimate. After ending a file I save the file as a pspimage file. The file size is 126MB. When I try to open this file to continue editing it won't open. If I open a file that is 80MB it will open okay. Can anyone give me any info as to why this is occurring? Any help would be most appreciated.

Regards Ray

126MB or 80MB say nothing about the image's real size.
Give us the size in pixels so we can test.

Hi Jean-Luc,
Thank you for your reply. The original RAW or TIF/TIFF files are not the issue. I can open up very large files in these formats. It is the "pspimage" files that won't open.
1/ I open a RAW or TIF/TIFF file to edit.
2/ Edit the file. The edit may contain several layers.
3/ Save the edited file as a "pspimage" file so I can return back to editing at a later date. As long as the file is not closed I can continue editing. Once the file is closed then the problem occurs.
4/ If the "pspimage" file is larger than 100MB Paintshop will freeze when trying to open the file.
5/ I save the edited file as a TIF file.
6/ The edited TIF file can be opened no matter what size it is.

Not being able to open the "pspimage" file is problematic when wanting to do some refinements to the editing as I can't access all the layers that have been created.

Hi Jean-Luc,
I'm not sure what you are referring to, "special pspimage compatibility"

Tested a few minutes ago :

- Creating image size 3900 x 2600 pixels
- Drawing on the background
- Duplicating the background as new layers 10 x
I have now a 10 layers image with something painted on each layer.

Saving as pspimage, X8 compatibility, uncompressed.
Closing the image
Verifying in Windows Explorer : my pspimage is 367 Mo large.

Returning to X8.2 and opening the image : no problem.

Try to reset your X8.2 to its initial state (close, maintain Shift key down and launch again, maintain down until you get the confirmation message).
This will remove all personalized settings (make a workspace save before to reset). Preferences will be lost.

Hi Jean-Luc,
Thanks for your reply. I have just tried this now, but alas it still won't open a pspimage file that is 144MB in size.

I have just noted your other comments. I will go and try re-saving the file.

Before you try the "reset", delete the cache file : Preferences... etc... delete the cache file... OK
Close PSP.
The cache file will be recreated automatically, but fresh, on next launch.
Sometimes, the cache file is corrupted and may give unpredictable results.

Hi Jean-Luc,
Thanks again for your reply. I have just tried this as well as doing a "reset", but still no success.

I notice in your info that you are using X8.2. My version is 18.1.0.67 x64. I have checked the update but it says that the program is up to date. Is this the same version as what you are using?

I'm not saying this will fix the issue you are working with Jean-Luc on but since you mentioned it you can download SP2 here:

PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

Hi Kathy_9 and Jean-Luc,
I have just installed service pack 2. Still no success. I'll try resaving a file with service pack 2 installed and see if this makes any difference.

Just tried saving a new pspimage file and it still won't open. PSP just freezes as soon as I try to open it.

I would suggest that you do a complete uninstall and reinstall of the program. First, get the Cleanup Tool from the sticky post near the top of this forum and use it to do the uninstall. Then reboot your system. Then reinstall PSP and do another reboot. Then try saving a pspimage file. Make sure you set the compatibility when saving from the Options as suggested earlier.
