VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Some guy at Corel named John left me hanging without any solution to a problem I have with Corel's VideoStudio Ultimate X9. He wasted a week of my time, then he just vanished!
My X9 wouldn't boot. Contacted Corel and they couldn't fix it without a completely new reinstall of the program. After doing that according to their steps, X9 will now boot-up but, it will not allow me to access any of the "Samples" files. Clicking on any of them results in a "re-check/re-link dialog box". For some reason, those files weren't installed properly. I cannot find them. I still want to know how to get ALL of them added properly, as they should have been added during the new install. Corel can't (or, won't) tell me how. Hopefully, someone here knows how it can be done. I can't use the program at all.

Well I'm not sure I can tell you how to get Videostudio to do it automatically if the "experts" at Corel can't
what I can do is to tell you how to do it manually - which will be retained on future opening of Videostudio
In may be worth first trying the 'Reset Library' option - - - click on "Settings >> Library Manager >> Reset Library"
if Corel have already tried that or if you find it doesn't work then it will have to be the long way - as follows
In the very top right corner of the 'samples' library pane is an icon that looks like n old manilla folder with the tool tip 'Import Media Files" - clicking on that will open a "Browse Media file " window using that browse to and select the files in the following folders - you can multi select files using the standard Windows 'select' - - - 'Shift+select'
For Videos - - - C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9\Samples\Video the files in the samples library are SP-V01 to SP-V21
For images - - - C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9\Samples\Image the files in the sample library are SP101.jpg to SP123.jpg
For Audio - - - C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9\Samples\Audio the audio files in the samples library are SP-M01.mpa to SP-S25mpa
Other files in those folders appear in other libraries - if you find you are missing other files in other libraries we can sort that out as well

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Hi Brian,
Thank you! Your first suggestion ("Reset Library") worked. But, it cleared out many samples (ones I couldn't use) and replaced them with only a few samples (which I can use).
From that point, I began trying your other steps, starting with Videos. When I followed the path you provided to the ...\Samples\Video folder, I found only 4 files (SP-V02.mp4, SP-V03.mp4, SP-V04.wmv, Video Matte 01.mp4). In that same folder there were also 5 *.swf files named (FL-F01.swf, FL-F02.swf, FL-F03.swf, FL-F04.swf, FL-F05.swf). Note: Some of those are dated back to the year 2005)???
I stopped long enough to come back here and reply to you with the information, above. At this point, maybe I should clarify that I'm using the 64-bit version of VS Ultimate X9. Because of that, will the PATH to possibly another "Samples" folder on my hard drive be different? I'm asking because I expected to find many more samples available than the few I found on your path. When I used VS-X5, I had very many items in the program's Samples folder.
QUICK EDIT: BTW, Corel told me to reinstall the program to the Windows DESKTOP, not to a custom folder. Originally, I had installed VS X9 to the [C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoStudioX9] folder on my hdd. (It's still there, since Corel did NOT tell me to remove it). I went ahead and followed the directions they gave me and installed the program to the DESKTOP. Now, I have 2 installations on the same drive. Installing it to the DESKTOP is Corel's DEFAULT installation path.

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
It would appear that all of your standard content has not installed correctly - in the Video sample folder I directed you to I see 40 swf files - 2 mp4 files and 18 wmv files - and yes many of them do date back to 2005 - I gave you the path to the samples folder for the 64 bit version .
The programme has NOT installed on your desktop - if you open the folders on your desktop you will not find a Vstudio.exe - check where the shortcut on your desktop - or under the start button is pointing.
When you download Videostudio the downloaded files are by default sent to a folder on your desktop - but nothing is installed there - when you actually install the programme some set up files go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9 but the programme is installed to C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9 - - - once you have a fully working programme you can delete the folder on the desktop - but since this is what you need to re-install I always copy that to a safe external drive or save to a DVD so that if you have a computer malfunction you can re-install Videostudio
your install does not seem to have unpacked all the standard content - I would suggest that you try to reinstall just that (NOT THE COMPLETE PROGRAMME)
to do that go to the folder on your desktop and inside that you should find some more folders one of which is called "Standard Content"
open that folder and 'RUN' - - setup_CHD.exe - - which should install all the standard content to those sample folders
..

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Hi Brian,
When going to the folder on the desktop and looking into each subfolder, I couldn't find the folder named "Standard Content." So, I did a complete search of my C:\ drive (for the "setup_CHD.exe" file and it found that folder on this path: [C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoStudioX9\StandardContent]. That was the only place where that file named "setup_CHD.exe" existed on my hdd. I should also mention that its date is 4/8/2016 (that's April 8, 2016), which is the date of the OLDER installation of X9? I performed a complete re-installation of X9 on 4/11/2016 (after using Corel's "Removal Tool"). It may be that everything is installed correctly and it's merely the date that's confusing me?
Brian, I do have the problem with the "Samples" folder contents solved. Along with your great help and some help from a different Corel Support person, I think this issue is resolved. He wrote the following:
Thank you for your timely, helpful information! Appreciated very much.

Brian, I'm pretty sure that you were correct in telling me that the "setup_CHD.exe" file should have been in a folder on a different path from where I located the one I found. I believe that somehow, my latest re-install failed to work properly --using their suggested steps to install it. Nevertheless, I think I can finally use the program."Where the Samples are concerned, what I would do, if connected, would be to reinstall the samples pack from it's installer, then launch Videostudio, click on Settings> Library Manager, and Reset the library. Now, anything you have imported would be lost, by doing this, but it will re-scan the necessary folders, and all all the samples, from every category and section, back into the list."
Thank you for your timely, helpful information! Appreciated very much.

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Hi Brian,
Yesterday, I had a Sr. Corel Support person connect remotely to my system to repair installation problems with VS-X9. However, even though X9 runs, it does NOT include certain things. For instance, when I click on the "FX" Tab and look for "NewBlue Video Essentials VII," -- it is not in the list. Supposedly, it's included with VS-X9? Neither does my "Samples" folder display ALL Samples. It displays only a few. Of course, I can add them manually, on-at-a-time, but during previous installations, that area was filled with lots of samples.
Is this something you've heard of before?

* Well, it's several hours later and I now have the various other X9 Bonus items installed. The nice guy who helped me yesterday forgot to install the VSX9_BonusFeature package. I downloaded and installed it myself so, I'm done for awhile.

A couple of posts back I asked you to run the "setup_CHD.exe" file - I had the impression that you did that and it solved your samples problem - you now seem to be saying it did not
did you run that file and did you see any difference in your samples library
can you now confirm - what Videostudio related folders you have on your desktop - are there any sub-folders in there - what are they
what sub-folders do you now have in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9 - (any version of X9)

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Hi Brian,
From what I'm about to (try) to tell you, you'll see how confused I am about Corel's Installation method. There's so much information, I'm not sure of the best way to present it to you here. But, I'll try.
First, yes, I did run the "setup_CHD.exe" file. It did load the samples. However, a couple of days later, the Corel support person made changes, deleted things, and reinstalled other things. Now, I no longer have the multitude of Samples in its folder as I did earlier. Hmmm?
Secondly, I'm going to (try) to present the folder path structure(s) related to VideoStudio & NewBlueFX (the way it exists now after he "fixed" my products). This WILL take up a lot of space in this thread. I don't know how else to do it.
---- I typed these manually ----
Brian, it's much more difficult to "show" you how things look regarding my C:\ drive for both Program Files and Program Files(x86). So, I'll just summarize.
Here's the path to where VideoStudio X9 is currently installed to:
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9 -- Note: This folder contains a lot of files.
Here's another mention of VideoStudio X9
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9\Setup -- Note: It has only a sub-folder named "Setup." There are no installed files here.
Here's where my VideoStudio X5 is installed. You can see that it's installed under C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\, as well. It has lots of files, since it IS installed here. But, it lost lots of information after using the custom "dll" yesterday. I guess that's another issue I can deal with later.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X5
So, Brian, the answer to your last question is "Yes. I do have a sub-folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X9 but, nothing is installed there. There's only a sub-folder named "Setup."
Does this installation reveal anything to you which might be causing issues?

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
well that's the second expert you've had inside your computer isn't it ? not sure I can do much more than they have I can see you have done a lot of work - and it looks as though you have all the right folders - but the New Blue ones obviously not be empty
the desktop folder is just the downloaded files which are then unpacked and installed to their correct locations - you seem to have the correct ones there
is there a 'Videostudio.exe' in the desktop folder
the only other option I can suggest at the moment is a programme reset which we have found works for some problems - it involves yet another Videostudio folder which you do not appear to have found yet - you can try this
Close Videostudio
Navigate your way to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\19.0 - note that is in AppData inside a Ulead folder
Rename the 19.0 folder to 19.0_old (just incase we need to go back)
Start Videostudio - this will force the programme to re-populate that folder and reset a number of functions
see what happens

And just be aware this process takes a bit of time and goes through about 3 phases. Some of the time it appears as though the process has hung. But be patient and give it time -- say about 5 minutes. But the program should eventually open and hopefully the missing bits will be there this time.BrianCee wrote:Start Videostudio - this will force the programme to re-populate that folder and reset a number of functions

And, about the path to Ulead (and to Ken), here's what I see when I look at that path:

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Ignore the one in the Corel Videostudio Pro folder - that is just a configuration file
It is the one in the path via the CorelVideostudio(X64) - as per my link which you need to rename
It is good that there is an .exe file in the desktop - during all the dealings with Corel and 'experts' playing inside your computer have any of them actually un-installed X9 and then done a re-install

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
Thank you, Brian. BTW, I'd like to mention that I've only ever allowed one person to access my computer (remotely) in all the many years I've had computers. The one person allowed to do that was a Senior Technician Dept. Head at Corel with 23 years experience. Plus, it took me 2 or 3 days to make up my mind whether or not to allow even him to do it! I'm paranoid that way. But, I was at my wits end and could no longer focus nor understand why Corel does things the way they do it.
For instance, both X5 and X9 are 64-bit programs. Yet, now, they are each installed on two separate paths. X9 is installed under [C:\program files] and X5 is installed under [C:\program files (x86)]. Correct me if I'm wrong but, isn't [C:\program files (x86)] where 64-bit programs are installed normally on a Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit version? That is very confusing to me since they each have files scattered all over the place.
Anyway, I'll have to think about the suggestion to rename/re-install programs (again). I don't even know which of those "missing files" I should be looking for afterwards, to see if they got installed. I'll have to conclude this topic until I find that I cannot actually use something in either version.
** That reminds now to ask if there was a separate stand-alone new (Bonus "Samples") package included with the purchase of VS-X9 Ultimate? I think I remember seeing it offered somewhere but, I can no longer find it. Having that just might solve my problem with having no more than 4 or 5 samples in VS-X9. VS-X5 has hundreds of many types!

Re: VS Ultimate X9 - Faulty Install program?
The "Bonus Features" are in the folder on your desktop - whether or not they installed is another question
To uninstall and re-install Videostudio is a relatively easy - and should (in theory) solve the problems
first un-install by going to 'Control Panel >> Programs ans Features' and choosing to un-install Videostudio X9
then re-install by running the .exe file in the desktop folder and letting it do it's own thing without interfering with the install

VS X5 is not a 64K program (as far as I know) and 64K programs are installed in the \Program files folder while 32K programs are installed in the \Program Files (86) folder.
You are correct that each program also has other folders where files are stored. But you can often tell which is a X5 and which is the X9 related folder. X5 is identified by a 15.0 folder while X9 is identified by a 19.0 folder. In one of your images that you posted you showed a 19.0 folder inside a 15.0 folder which is incorrect and looks like it was done manually.
VS X9 Ultimate consists of 3 separate installs when done manually. 1) the main program, 2)the contents and 3) the Bonus features (which contains the extras such as the NewBlue Effect, Mercali, Boris Grafitti.) If X9 were stalled correct you would have all the samples etc that you had with X5 if not many more.
Like Brian says a complete uninstall of X9 and reinstall (of all 3 parts) should soleve your problem
