MPG clips are playing black in VS X9

Would anyone know why MPG clips (not the whole project) in VS X9 are playing black but there is audio?

where did these MPG files come from - what are their properties

please right click on one of them in the timeline of Videostudio and choose "properties" from the pop out - screen shot the properties box and attach it to your answer

Hi Brian:

Here is screen shot of one of my MPGs that play black as a clip in the library and as a clip on the timeline. I can see it however on the timeline if I click on the whole project.

This MPG was converted from MPEG-4 from my Android phone. The MPEG-4 files crash my VS X9.

Two things struck me as I looked at your preferences - if you are in the USA your copy of Videostudio will be expecting to see a frame rate of 30fps (29.97) - it could be not liking the 23.96 in your files - - the bit rate is a bit high for a standard mpeg_2 - usually we use a maximum of 8000

can you change the parameters in whatever programme you are using to convert to use 30fps and 8000kbps

Could you perhaps upload (to OneDrive or Google drive or some other site) a original unconverted short clip for us to play around with?

Canuck & Brian: Here is original MPEG-4 from my Android phone, 7 seconds. It loads into the library (X9) but when I click on it to play or try to drag to timeline, X9 crashes. When I convert to MPEG-2 clips play black with video but I am able to see the video as a "project" on the timeline.

Robert: Hm, interesting.

Now to try to figure out why I can't play MPEG-4 in X9. I did hide 3 Windows updates to try and get VS X6 to work.

Will see if Brian or Canuck have any input.

I remember a similar problem with black video in another VS version and can't remember the solution, possibly a .dll, but it's too long ago.

My OS is Windows 7 Premium, 64 bit.

I also had no trouble playing that clip in both Clip and Project mode in my fully up to date X9 running under Windows 10.

I might note, though, that the Properties I have for that clip show a frame rate of 30.007 fps, which nevertheless still indicates it is of the variable framerate type which VS seems to have problems with for some people. I would also note that that clip shows as an mpeg-4 file not mpeg-2, and has a different number than the one Candy showed the Properties of above.

No problem playing the clip with VS X9 on a W7 system in both clip and project mode.

Yes, Ken on the properties I posted, that was for the converted MPEG-2, converted from the MPEG-4 clip I put on One Drive. The MPEG-2 clips play black when in the library but audio works, they play ok however as a project on the timeline. The MPEG-4 crashes VS X9.

I'll try to figure out the frame rate thing, maybe that's the problem.

You'll find lots of issues about "MP4 crashes VS". I'm afraid these mp4 files are encoded by MPEG-4. Once I change mp4 to mkv (H.264), it works. Surely, H.264 has a very broad application range and MPEG-4 is used to compress AV data for web streaming, CD distribution, voice (telephone, videophone) and broadcast television applications.

Your clip works absolutely fine in my version of X9 Candy - plays from the library or the timeline in clip or project mode

just a thought - can you confirm your version number - "Help >> About" - string of 4 numbers starting 19.
