convert old 4x3 files to 16x9 in VS X9

Post by Skipper »

Can someone point me to a thread explaining how to convert 720x576 DV Type-1 PAL (old tape files I have from a SONY Digital Handycam) into 16x9 format so that I might use some of this old stock footage I have in current videos please?
I tried to find such threads without any luck and U-tube was little help for Video Studio users. Any assistance welcome. Thanks Skipper

You can't just 'convert' 4:3 to 16:9 without causing distortion they are a different shape

but there are a number of things you can do in Videostudio

you could just put your 4:3 clip in a 16:9 project and pull the image to fit side to side - you will loose the top and bottom of the image but only you can decide if that matters

normally you would put a 16:9 clip - either still or a video in the top track and put your 4:3 footage in an overlay track - choosing the 16:9 clip to complement your 4:3 footage

maybe something like this using a video : - - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJf4hpKctj0

or something like this using a still image

or maybe this if it includes children

Thanks Brian, I had suspected as much but it was worth asking. A good outcome though - I decided to make a feature of the "old look" and went so far as to convert some lead in files to Black and white then at the end I added a few more black and white. This caused me to find a way (on You-tube) to transition from one to the other over an extended time without using different frames and cause blur. Simple as when you see it done:
Cut the clip at an appropriate spot and lower the latter piece carefully without loosing it's time spot to the overlay track. Now back to the timeline and drag out the clip to whatever length you want for the transition (obviously still within the scope of the original clip) Add the black and white effect to which ever piece you want. Now zoom right in on the time line so you can see individual frames and then carry the clip laying on the overlay line back up to it's exact place above and voila - you have a neat yet simple and smooth transition! But I guess I was the only one who did not already know that? My thanks to the anonymous soul who showed me how on You tube. :)

Hi Skipper,
If you still have the link to the video on YouTube could you post it on the board please. I am in the process of doing similar conversions and always open to new ideas.

Thanks

Sorry Allan, had a quick look and can't see the post. Lots of program specific stuff, not for VS and what I found really works and is not difficult.
I am off to an appointment but will get time this afternoon and will have a better look, failing that, I will try to describe the steps better. Skipper

Back again Alan, and I found the link

Good luck, I found it useful and not complicated, just a little long winded in the explanation
