Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

Post by pepegotsi »

As QT is used by VS, I thought this interesting:
This past Thursday, The United States Department of Homeland Security issued an alert advising people running Apple's QuickTime program on Windows computers to immediately uninstall the software. QuickTime was once a popular package for playing video and audio clips on computers, but it has since been eclipsed by other technologies.

Unfortunately, security vulnerabilities continue to be discovered in the QuickTime software - including two critical ones announced just this past week that could allow criminals to hack into computers with QuickTime installed if the devices' users either run malware or visit a malicious webpage (which a criminal can induce via phishing, offering some "great deal" and spreading word of it on social media, etc.). Without security patches being issued by Apple, QuickTime software poses a serious danger to those running it.ting:

Hi,
Isn't it just the Quicktime web plugin that isn't being updated? Starting with QuickTime version 7.7.9, the browser plugin is no longer installed by default. I can' t see why there would be vulnerabilities with just the codecs and the player installed. Perhaps someone with more experience with these issues will chime in.

I had one program complain about QuickTime not being installed; I uninstalled it and VS X9 works perfectly for my video sources. The program that complained is Lightroom; it said something like some sources will not be handled without QuickTime installed and it offered to install it for me and I declined, of course. I am basically not creating nor using any .MOV videos, and if I have a need for one of these videos, I will use Format Factory or some other converter program to get off .MOV.

Well at the moment more and more users are saying that they have un-installed Quicktime and Videostudio is still working - so there won't be a problem

Most of Adobe products require QT, as a member of the current Adobe Premiere/Photoshop Beta test team, the question has been asked, but so far there has been no response from their technical dept., we should remember that all NLE providers have been caught on the hop with this, so there must be a lot of backroom discussions currently under way.

I've sent a query on April 16th and part of the answer was : With regards to your query, we are aware of the article that Mac -in the future will discontinue support for Quicktime player for Windows but you do not have to worry as this issue will not create a big impact on your Software.

I went back yesterday : Good morning Jomar,

I’m not looking for software to play « mov » clip. There are lots of people on the Web mentioning that if QuickTime is uninstalled, VideoStudio won’t be able to play those « mov » clips when inserted in the timeline.

You wrote, « you do not have to worry as this issue will not create a big impact on your Software ». My question is : What impact will it have, whatever is the impact ? Will VideoStudio still function properly (no problem at all) / play old « mov » clips that people already own if QuickTime is uninstalled ?

Waiting for answer.

There may be no need to uninstall QT

The QT software 7.7.9 releases Jan 7 2016 no longer includes the QT web browser plugin previously installed by default. To exploit the vulnerabilities would require a user to activity visit a malicious webpage or open a malicious file.
If you have version 7.7.9 go to Edit/Preferences/QuickTime Preferences/Browser, make sure that playback settings are unchecked and change MIME Settings to disassociate all files. That should mean that nothing from the web should open with QT Player. WMP, VLC etc. can open .MOV files
So just turn off every default, QT related off.

Thanks Robert, but I don't trust it. No website, nor Apple, has mentioned anything but uninstall of QuickTime removes the vulnerabilities. I think a website may look for QT installation to exploit the vulnerabilities. Until I hear from Apple, or some other hacker website about how to safely continue to have QT installed, I will not have it installed.

I didn't get an answer from Corel for my last question, but I got one from CyberLink as I own PowerDirector Suite 13. Their answer :
Our products use QuickTime to play and publish(edit) videos MOV which contain the codec of QuickTime. If you uninstall QuickTime of your computer the codec H.264 in MOV format remains supported(born) all the same in the software of CyberLink.

I presume that it should be something similar within VideoStudio ???

Whilst MOV can be imported and played in VSX9 without QT Player being installed, you cannot Share in MOV format, which would make the MOV Share option obsolete, just means using an alternative when rendering

Without QT you will be unable to use SmartSound within PowerDirector 13, CyberLink didn't tell you that did they, see ynotfish (Tony) post on the CyberLink forum

You are right RobertOZ.

This is the main part of what was posted on PowerDirector forum on April 20th, 2016 :
In the meantime, users may uninstall QuickTime from their PCs. Please note that doing so will remove the following functionalities:

- Import MOV video files that contain the QuickTime codec.
- Produce MOV video files in PowerDirector.
- Apply SmartSound (PowerDirector).

Please note that MOV files that use the H.264 codec will not be affected by a QuickTime uninstall. If the playback or editing of QuickTime MOV video files is required, QuickTime is still able for download from Apple Inc. website.

I don't use much SmartSound, but do use MOV files once in awhile such as explosion from Detonation Films (http://www.detonationfilms.com/). How can I see if those MOV use H H.264 codec ?
