Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
Corel needs to address the use of QuickTime. Apple is saying they will not update it (has not been updated since January 2016), and it has a couple of serious vulnerabilities. Here's a portion of the text of the news item I just read at PCWorld:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3056625/ ... flaws.html
"Apple told Trend Micro it is deprecating the software and will no longer deliver security updates for it. Second, there are two known critical vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to take control of a system running QuickTime."
"Why this matters: Whenever software is about to be abandoned it’s always a good idea to move away from it—or at least start planning to. That goes double for software with known flaws that allow the bad guys to execute code on your machine. QuickTime used to be an important piece of software for Windows users. But these days you don’t need it to watch movie trailers on Apple’s site and it's no longer used by iTunes to play media on Windows. There’s little reason for the vast majority of Windows users to keep QuickTime on their PCs."

No need to panic. At least this component will not need to be update anymore.
There are other more important things need to be fixed in VS.

#1, is Quicktime a necessary program for VideoStudio. IF it is, then yes, something has to be done.

Did you read that article? QuickTime has serious vulnerabilities that can damage your computer. I do not want it installed in my pc. It will cause me to abandon VS if I can't un-install QuickTime.asik1 wrote:No need to panic. At least this component will not need to be update anymore.

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
I am going to un-install any software that I know has vulnerabilities. I expect and do get updates from Windows to address its vulnerabilities. We can now expect none for QuickTime and the author, Apple, admits it has vulnerabilities and this is a very different situation.canuck wrote:Windows has serious vulnerabilities (again and again) that can damage you computer. Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
Well, for many of us removing QuickTime is not an option, many programs require it, CyberLink, Adobe, Sony etc: and if you use Sonicfire Pro for SmartSound, QT is a requirement, will not run without it

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
We've recently purchased some .mov clips for a project. The only way VideoStudio can open or import these, is if the machine also has Quicktime. Is this correct, or, is there a way to uninstall Quicktime, and still be able to use .mov clips? The clips have an alpha channel so I dont think converting them in another utility, would work for us.

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
I removed QuickTime. VS X9 works for me. I can even insert a .mov file in the timeline and it is fine. Of course, I expect not to be able to share/render a QuickTime file. It appears that for me, I can run without QuickTime installed.

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
What does Trevor (lata), Ken Berry and Brian Cee think of this.
Shall we uninstall QuickTime immediately ? I don't really need it to view one of the files it supports as I can easily convert almost any file with Roxio Creator 2011 and AVS4YOU. My only apprehension is : Will Corel VideoStudio (whatever the version), Roxio MyDVD (Corel), Cyberlink will still work as it should without QuickTime on my computers ?

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
I wonder if there is a distinction between the QT .mov codec and QT as a program/viewer? Maybe uninstalling QT nevertheless left the codec still there, and that, after all, is what VS is really looking for. I am in the very slightly more difficult position of having bought the Pro version of QT for its conversion capacity, so I won't be uninstalling anything until things start going wrong on the .mov front.aljimenez wrote:I removed QuickTime. Moreover, I am also in the same position as Rod77 above -- and others here no doubt -- of having a subscription with Digital Juice, whose clips are all in .mov format (moreover clips with alpha channel transparency). These are usually lovely pieces of work, and again I will not be giving that up at any time soon. It will be interesting to see, though, what Digital Juice might do in the medium to long term in converting its huge current stock and finding an alternative format.

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
*IF* Quicktime is necessary to run Videostudio then I would expect Corel to introduce an alternative means of running VS pretty quick - or else Videostudio is dead
If it is not necessary then I will be converting my .mov files to something else that does work in VS
I don't have any third party clips such as those from Digital Juice but surely they must do something for all their customers or else Apple just killed that part of their business

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows
I realy don't understand your panic. You never spoke so loud about old and outdated VS procedures that came from Ulead.
Vs will not be dead as it can still rely on QT 776 as needed,
If you read just a bit more deeply into the alerts, you will find that the major problem is with QT stuff over the web, so simply you can deny playback of these in your browser. I don't think that if your camera shoot MOV's you should be worry of it's clips.
- But I can be wrong of course

I need to correct part of the above, SmartSound can be used with Sonicfire Pro(version 5 & up) without QT being installed, it is only where SmartSound is used from within VSX7 (where SmartSound is available) or CyberLink PowerDirector where QT is a requirement to use SmartSound
