X8 Installation problem

Post by rfeiring »

Trying to install newly purchased 64 bit VideoStudio X8 on Win7 Home Premium system and it gets to "Please wait while we configure Flash Player" and hangs there [currently 30 minutes & counting]. Is there any way to get passed this and complete the install? I had X6 and it worked fine until recent Windows updates. I only purchased X8 to bypass those problems and now I have nothing to use despite purchasing 2 Corel products. I am starting to feel ripped off.

Can you confirm that you do have a version of Flash Player installed and that it is the latest version

I was a satisfied user of VideoStudio X6 until the recent Windows update issues. After several months of hiding various Windows updates, I decided that security was more important than usability and I purchased VideoStudio8 Ultimate [which supposedly had hotfixes to both let me run and feel safe].
I tried to install the 64 bit version of X8 on my Windows 7 Home Premium System and the progress bar moved to approx. 70% and the “wait configuring FlashPlayer” where it remained for 30+ minutes. The splash screen display kept cycling through the various graphics explaining how great the program is and my DVD drive would randomly chatter leading me to believe the install was caught in an inescapable loop. Since there was no way to cancel the install, I opened Task Manager and ended the process.
I then tried to install the 32 bit version but, surprise, surprise, the program decided it wanted to uninstall the [incomplete] 64 bit version. I don’t understand why because they are placed into different file folders, but I went ahead, assuming the new install would automatically follow the removal. However, logic was not to triumph. After the 30 minutes it took to uninstall, the program just quit and I had to go back and manually select the 32 bit install again. The 64 bit install process described above was repeated exactly and I was again forced to end the process. [I had the latest Flash Player version installed, and the product box does not indicate it is even a system requirement, so it does not make sense that the install would hang there]
So, with 2 incomplete installs under my belt, I decided to try and run the Service packs and Hot Fixes to see what would happen. Service Packs 2 & 3 and Hotfix #2 surprisingly indicated that they installed correctly. Hotfix #1 on the other hand indicated that the required product was not found.
I clicked on the desktop shortcut that was created very early in the install process and the program eventually started. I am not sure if I have the entire program or not, and which, if any features are missing. I also have the 32 bit version, not the 64 I wanted. I suppose I could spend another several hours removing the 32 bit, incompletely restoring the 64 bit, doing all the patches and praying that it works, but why would I want to risk having nothing again?
Pressing my luck, I went to disc 2 and selected ‘Install All’ from the menu. ‘Blue FX’ installed fine but the progress bar went to about 25% while ‘Installing Boris’ and then hung for for 15 minutes. Since the cancel button was grayed out [why is it there if you can’t use it?], it was back to the Task Manager again. Giving up on old Boris, I tried to install proDAD Mercalli but the progress bar got to about 50% and hung with the cancel button unusable [surprise!]. I triede 1 more time with proDAD Vitascene and here the progress bar started at 50% and never moved.
So, even if I can run some semblance of the program, it is certainly not the “Ultimate” version I purchased.
The persons responsible for these install programs should be ashamed of themselves. As a person who writes code for Pharmaceutical Process Automation programs, I know that you have to build in fail-safes that will allow a human to intercede in the process if the program encounters information it can not handle.
Corel should be ashamed for deceptively selling this software. If Flash Player, and who knows what else, is required for the install, then put it on the box.
