Re: VS X6 cant open mp4's
I was also thinking that it could be my sim card in my phone. There were a few times lately that I was making a video and it stopped recording because it ran out of memory then the recording started saving in the internal storage on the phone. I just don't know which of the videos that this was a problem with because I was making many videos and not loading them into VS yet. So it's just a thought.

Re: VS X6 cant open mp4's
I don't think it's your SIM card -- the video Video0398.mp4 plays perfectly in VLC player, but I get the same File Format Mismatch error you got, even though I am trying to open it in X9 and under Win 10.
And I think the answer in this particular case is pretty obvious!! Why, in the first place, are you using your Smartphone to take video vertically (i.e. narrow horizontally and tall vertically?) when the obvious way is to turn your smartphone horizontally?
Moreover, one of my original worries seems to be borne out when I look at the Properties of the clip as shown by VLC Player -- namely that the clip has Properties which are not quite standard. Namely a frame size of 738 x 1280 and a bitrate of 29.809135 fps. Unfortunately, a lot of more recent smartphones are using both frame sizes and bitrates which are variable and do not match the exact standards used by Video Studio viz. 1280 x 720 and 29.97 fps... This causes VS to cough and splutter or, in other words, to be unable to play those types of video.
I think the suggestion has already been made, but the easiest way to deal with your existing captures is to use a third party converter like Format Factor to convert it to more standard properties. And ultimately, for future video, to hold the phone horizontally and set it to take standard format video....

Re: VS X6 cant open mp4's
Ken, I rarely use the phone in that way to make videos. I should have sent a different video I guess. The problem happens when videos are made horizontally too. I'm glad you don't think it's the sim card because I don't either. I removed the battery and sim card yesterday just in case but that made no difference.
I installed VLP Player so that I can also work with this, but I can't find the bitrate...I could only find the frame size. Now I'm going to install Format Factor and try to convert the videos.
Also, I wouldn't know how to change the phone settings for the resolution except for the 4 options they have as presets. which are 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720, 320 x 240 and 176 x 144.
If the res. is coming out to be 738 instead of 720, I wouldn't know how to correct that.
The thing that bothers me the most is that for the last two years I have been using this same phone to record my videos with no problems and just now problems are popping up out of nowhere. That's very puzzling to me.
Anyway thanks for the info and I'll get back to report about the file conversions soon.

Re: VS X6 cant open mp4's
I got format factory to install, so I just need to know a few things.
What format should I convert to? Mp4 to Mp4, or Mp3?
OK NEVERMIND ALL OF THAT! I just edited/deleted a paragraph that i got solved. i got it to download from softonic using the facebook sign in which wasn't as drastic as using google plus to sign in.
I have just one question for now. Is there a problem with converting to .avi and keep it there or should/can I convert it from mp4 to mp4 or mp4 to avi and back to mp4. Or should I try a different file format altogether?

Re: VS X6 cant open mp4's
I don't show the 738x1280 properties that Ken states he sees with VLC. This is for the 395.mp4 and the 398.mp4 videos. I get 1280x720 using VLC, MediaInfo as well as other programs such as Freemake, Quicktime, etc. The two videos certainly appear to be "horizontal" in those programs. In fact when I use Roxio Creator NXT3 (another Corel product), they both load and I can edit them. The only thing that is unusual is the frame rates: variable and from 3.550 to 7.5 fps for 395.mp4 and a fps of 12.228 to 31.153 for the 398.mp4 video. I think the problem lies definitely with VS not being able to recognize variable frame rates.

Normally I would just convert to their version of mp4 with FF's preset AVCHD properties. Of course you could try AVI if that doesn't produce a good result, but I think it will...

Re: VS X6 cant open mp4's
Ok, Thank you, Ken, Trevor and everyone else.
I was finally able to get the videos to play. I converted the MP4 files to AVI and they are loading into VS using File Factory and they are playing fine.
Are there any drawbacks to using .avi as a format? They should upload ok to the internet and all that?
I was thinking about experimenting with convering one of them back to mp4 to see if it works.
I couldn't have done it without all of your help.
Thanks again!

Ken, I think I was writing my post at about the time you were writing yours.Ken Berry wrote:Normally I would just convert to their version of mp4 with FF's preset AVCHD properties. Of course you could try AVI if that doesn't produce a good result, but I think it will...
I will try what you suggested with another video to see how it works. When I converted the file to avi, there was no choppiness or apparent problems with the playback of the video. So I think it'll work that way.
Thanks.
