Greetings! I have searched but can't find a solution to my problem.
I have a Sony Hi 8 Digital camcorder, Model #DCR-TRV520, connected via the 4-pin "DV In/Out" plug on the camera, to the Firewire port on my computer. My computer is a Velocity Micro, Vector SX-V, Pentium IV 550 w/HT, 3.4 GHz, 1 MB cache, DDR memory 1024MB PC3200 DDR400, PCX Video 128 MB eVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT, 200GB Hard Drive, Optical Drive 16x Lite On DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Dual Layer, 2 Firewire ports, Running Windows XP Home, Ulead Digital Creation Suite - Movie Factor 3.

First, when I connect the cable to the Firewire port, the computer does not recognize the camera, even when I turn the camera on and press play.
Second, when I start MovieFactory 3, click Next, then "Capture Videos from a video device", I get this error message "No capture driver is available in the system".

Do I need to download a driver, or do I have to do something in Windows to get the computer to recognize the camera? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before MF can do anything windows must recognize the camcorder.
Are there any settings in that unit to activate the firewire ports.
You need to put the camcorder into VCR mode (VTR).

Plug the camcorder into the firewire port.
Then turn the cam into VTR mode.
Give windows about 15 seconds to register it.
Goto Start->Control_Panel->Scanners and Cameras
You should be able to see the camcorder in that window.

Some cams will not output firewire data unless they are running from
the AC power source. Battery doesn't work (depends on the cam).

Hope this helps,

In my camera, Panasonic GS400 I have to activate the DV out port from the camera menu.
If all else fails, and being a SONY, it may, shut down your computer, connect the camera, switch on the camera, set it to play back mode and then start up your PC.
If your OS recognizes the camera on start up, you'll be right, if not :?
