Canon 7DMk2

Post by pgman »

I've been a long term user. I stopped with 2.1 because of too many crashes.

I just reinstalled ASP with 2.4. It's much more stable, but it doesn't recognize my camera: Canon 7DMk2. It's fairly mainstream camera that has been available for a year and half.

Does any has a profile for it?

Thanks

I ran strings on the binary, and the 2.4 version can process images from your 7DMk2. What it won't do - at least without some work from you - is apply optical correction to the RAWs it develops. I haven't got time to try this out (or a 7DMk2 ;-() ) but perhaps you could create a set of camera defaults that would check the Lens Correction tab, select Canon as the manufacturer, and the 7DM2 as the model. You could even pre-select your favourite lens as part of the default.

So far, so easy. You will also need to create a correction profile of your own for the lens database. Read AFX's book on this, if you can't get enough howto from this forum.

Yes and no.

I can open the 7dmk2 files, at first they (the jpeg previews) are sharp and crisp, then after a few second the image displayed becomes 'extra soft'.

I have tried with sharpening... I can't get it back.

I think that it has to do with the demosaic and ASP takes it from another camera that doesn't match the 7DMk2.

You tried sending them to an output batch? Call me suspicious, but I only do the coarsest cull on the basis of what I see in the preview screens.
And I take it you have tried the wavelet sharpening plugin? I have this as a camera default, because the results with all of my A-Mount lenses, whether Minolta, Sony, or Sigma are always a little too soft without it.

No, I haven't. When I look at my photos from the Canon 7D (my previous camera), they are good, they are not 'soft'. And I don't have that problem with the images of the Fujifilm X-T10. It's only the the 7Dmk2.

* First I load the images
* Quick look and decide to keep or delete (with flags). Focus, composition....
* Delete the rejected flags
* Rename the files to seomthing that make sense (to me)

Then, I will process a few images...

But the problem is that I can't judge the focus when the image is soft.

Given the wavelet sharpen plugin is free, you might try creating a camera specific default that applies a mild sharpening when you load images from that camera into ASP. On the whole I can tell the difference between (oof and sharpened) and (tack sharp and sharpened a bit more). Even in preview. Which I then verify against all but the throwouts.
