I just installed VS8X, because my existing software, is really slow (2 hour to render a 5 minute clip). OK to my point I bought a custom configured HP Envy (not even a week old yet) quad core Athlon, 3.66gHz processor, with 16gB ram.
I downloaded and installed VSx8, literally today. I tried a GoPro clip and wasn't really impressed, with what I had after rendering, I watched a GrIpps tut based on VSx6, but things have changed in X8, and the settings are a little different.
I learned while watching that tut, that I should match my settings to the source video, I was recording in 720p/60, but there is not a setting to match that I found anyway for general use (not necessarily YouTube) but to instead render a video for watching on my machine, maybe upload it at some point. What settings do you others use, in this application, and where do I find them?

Hi
Can you confirm that the Service Pack SP3 has been installed, this should automatically occur shortly after installation?
Go to Help - About, I see 18.6.0.6 as my version number
Matching Video Properties
This should improve things as it matches the frame rate, in your case setting it to 60p for your Go Pro, default would be 29.97fps.
First go to Preferences (F6) set Show Messages when inserting first video clip….
Now start a new project and add one of your clips to the top track, do you get a message asking to match the properties
, choose yes.
I assume your clips are Mpeg4 types.
Please right click a clip and choose properties, what are they
, take a screen shot of that panel to create a jpeg image , attach to your post.
I was able to manually set Project Properties using the On Line options to:-
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 59.94 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 15000 Kbps, 16:9
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps
Render times depend on what you are converting to, the best option is same as first clip. If changing the format then render times will increase?
OK
Ken Berry owns GoPro and is probably the best person to comment on your video, I am sure he will comment.

Re: GoPro basic best settings
Nothing really to add to what Trevor/lata has already suggested. Yes, I use a GoPro Hero 3 Black quite regularly, though I normally have mine set to record in 1920 x 1080 at 50 fps (as I am in a PAL country). But as Trevor suggested, I just make sure my X8 (and X7 before it and X9 now) have that Show Message box ticked, so when I insert my first GoPro clip into a new project, I get a message asking if I want the project properties to match those of the clip. I say yes, and the Properties are adjusted. Then when I have finished editing, I simply choose Share > Same As Project Settings (or even Same As First Clip) and I get an excellent new video from that project. (I suspect finding that might be the difference you have noticed between X6 and X8...)
I am sure the same should happen if your original footage is 1280 x 720 at 60p (though I am not sure why you are cutting down the quality by using that notionally lower format setting).

Re: GoPro basic best settings
I do have sp3 installed, thanks for the reply, Lata, I will check these things on my next recording. While I was playing around last night, I did find that VS doesn't have a fine tune rotation, as the camera is mounted on my dash, on a mount I made, I find that the video is about 1-2 degrees off horizontal, that may be an issue, moving forward. But I bought the software and I will use it.

Hi
Rotation, try Customised Motion, right click clip for option
set “Z” rotation, appears to be in degrees.
Adding this I assume will impact on render times which seems to be the original problem?

Re: GoPro basic best settings
Surely someone knows exactly how to straighten a video a few degrees, it is a rudimentary function, like cropping, or color correction. Trevor your suggestion using "Z" didn't seem to work, for me. Looks like it is suppose to keep rotating at a set rate for the duration of the clip, from what I can tell.
I just spent the better part of an hour, trying different things, I rotated then cropped, cropped then rated, and I still have an "un square" video with jagged edges, not an option.
So if anyone here actually has a method that actually has been tried and repeated, several times, post a reply outlining your preferred procedure.

Re: GoPro basic best settings
Apply the Rotate filter to your video, double click the video to open the filter editor and then select customise motion. Set the initial and last key frame to the correct rotation degree to make it horizontal

Re: GoPro basic best settings
Just to add, after setting the first Keyframe, right click the keyframe, (the red triangle) and choose “Copy and Paste to all”
That will set the last frame same as first and fix the rotation
There will be borders created by the rotation so you will have to Zoom-in to remove those, set size above 100%
Maybe the crop tool could cut those?
