using or importing X7 project in X8 and X9 lateron

Post by wimm »

Hi folks,
Currently I have unfinished projects in X7 and like to edit them further in X8 because of some features I want to use. Some actioncam for example have footage I like to correct with the lense filter in X8.
How do I get in the whole project, the footage with cuts and trims I already made in X7 into X8?
If I open the project file in X8, I only get the timeline filled with the footage I had on the timeline in X7,
No files showing up in media files area. In X7 I placed those files with dag and drop.

My system drive is C:. I installed X7 and X8 standard as they come.
My files are on the F: drive in a tree structure like this: (the <> are not part of the name)
F:\sourcefiles\<yyyy mm dd projectname>\audio
\stills
\video
Where <yyyy mm dd projectname> is unique for every project.

My project names are also constructed as <yyyy mm dd projectname>, with a version number added where applicable. But I recon this is not relevant.

What do I have to do to easily continue the work in progress in the new version.
I mean the files on the timeline ánd the sourcefiles with all their cuttings and trimmings. I do not like to recreate the frame exact cuttings by hand.

My workaround now is to complete the project and save it as a second version for X8. Then I open the project file in X8. There I use features not in X7.
But that's just a workaround. I like a solution for this.
I have not found an answer to my satisfaction yet.
Who can guide me in the right direction? If it is absolutely not possible what I want, I like to know also.
Thanks.

Videostudio does not automatically transfer media libraries to a later version - but when you open an X7 project in X8 or X9 all the edits you made in the timeline should still be there

There is a facility in Videostudio to export a library and then import in a later version but I never seem to get that right - It doesn't seem to work the way I expect it to

But I have a very simple method which works very well for me and should work for you

where the files are on your hard drive is not relevant at all - don't worry about that.

Open X7 but do not open any projects - slide everything from your media library down into the timeline - do a "File >> save" and call it something like "transfer 01" or just "Temp" - whatever

Now close X7 and open X8 and open the project you have just created - now push all the media clips back up into the libraries - arranging them as you wish.

you should now be able to continue your work flow.

I'm in the middle of some projects. When finished I'll give it a try and give my findings.
Brian, thanks sofar.

Tried it with a little project and library. It went well..
Only backdraw was a different behaviour with a clip that I played at 997% skipping every 11 frames to get a strobo/timelapse effect to the beat.
IN X7 I had the desired result, in X8 people were just running around at lightning speed..
I shortcut my problem by rendering the clips in highest possible quality and imported them in the timeline of X8. Then applied the lensfilter to minimise fisheye and finished the rendering.

BTW A large library almost renders the PC useless for a while when I put all clips in the timeline.. But thath's still far more easy than rebuilding everything completely by hand.
If the computer is busy, I can have a cup.. of coffee that is in the Netherlands..

So to be short: Thanks for the tip, Brian. I'll use it for all my projects not finished that need the use of X8 or X9.

X8 and X9 has a bug and strobe do not work.

Thanks asik.
Did not expect a reply to this because it was a bit off topic. But nevertheless thanks for the confirmation.
Did not know it is a bug, but could repeat it, so I assumed it to be stuctural.
Hope it will be solved. I'll see what future patches may bring.
In the meantime my workaround is sufficient for me.
And herewith I think this discussion comes to an end.
