Optimizing a PC for editing in VS X9

Post by Skipper »

Years ago one could find information from the video editing program manufacturers giving good detail about optimizing any PC to best suit their software. As in - some software will exploit the capabilities of faster(read "more expensive") graphics cards. Whilst still other software will gain no benefit from this added expense, instead using the CPU apparently. Everyone seems to say "add RAM" (to the motherboard) yet this has limited effect where the processing is being managed by the GPU? When I purchased my now 3 year old PC it had a good, middle of the road graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with 2GB RAM) but this is now old hat with much faster product available. However, faster is not better if errors creep in so what is a "good" video editing graphics board to work with VS X9? I have the existing PCIe x16 slot that I may use if any replacement was deemed worth the effort. And are there other tweaks that I could perform to optimize my PC which is otherwise working well for all other, non video editing functions. I do not play games so no need for that function at all whereas I find more time is being spent in video editing. Regards Skipper

Indeed it's a good question. Unfortunately it's only in Corel hands and ability to provide a relevant answer and it fails to do so.
Evan it's claims in Cuda support for VS is doubtful by many users. It's a <100$ program and it can't be perfect. See how crappy MS-OS's are and they surly have tons of programmers compare to the dozens Corel has.

I thank you for your response but hope there a bit less negativity on the subject than that. It may be a <$100 program but it still gets good reviews and apparently lots of people buy and use it. I agree Corel Tech Support is a let down hence my question to the forum. I am no computer whiz but feel sure there are some very clever people out there who will know the answers. Corel put some requirements up on the VS spec sheet but it is too non specific for my experience and I am still bewildered as to what part of my PC is doing "the work" when editing in VS X9. Also I have read that gaming cards may be fast but not particularly reliable when editing video. I have no problem with spending the money if there is a benefit that justifies the cost, bearing in mind that this is a non -commercial hobby. :) Skipper

Skipper, there are few threads about it in this forum and there are tools that will monitor your VS workloads.
Tools that I use are
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ - (I use RC03) Loads at boot and alert me if I need to "pump up" the fan.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sys ... ssexplorer (I use 15.4)
I also have
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

What might bother you even further is the benefit of 64 over 32 bit OS.
For my type of work (simple long or complex short projects) 32 is just fine as well as my Asus MB and CPU. (and I do get paid for most of my work)
Having said that, only recently I found a culprit in my GPU as it will not render NBtitleEX any larger than a 1308X736 frame.
