separating raw from jpg files
I save both RAW and JPG files from my Canon cameras. Is there a way to only show the raw CR2 files for editing? I don't see a filter setting based on the file extension. I suppose I could apply a label or flag and set the filter to exclude those but that would be an extra step, not to mention first selecting a lot of non-contiguous files in the thumbnail view. I could also remove the JPG files from their folders but then Ii couldn't quickly compare my editing results with what the camera thought was a good image.

You could use the metadata browser and select RAW under photo info>file type, then click refine. This seems to work well if you a navigating through files in your library, but not through the file system.

You also can mark the raw from your canon with the flag (and do some default setting, like copyright settings with IPTC-Metadata or more contrast / vibrance / sharpening that all fits for you) and then save as camera default (settings/save a camera default).
That has the effect that all raws from your camera will have the flag when you download them from the card. Then you can filter without importing the files.
