editing MP4 video with VS9.0

Post by Sally74 »

OK there's probably loads of things I don't understand - that's why I'm here:
I acquired VS9.0 about 2 months ago to make video using photos. Since then; I bought last week a Sanyo Xacti C1, which I am generally very pleased with. The Xacti came with VideoStudio SE 7 for MP4 video editing (until then, I didn't realise that the xacti only shot MP4 - had I known...). So, the problem is:
I cannot use VS9 to edit; because it keeps crashing.
I cannot switch from VS9 to VS7 SE, because these two programmes don't recognise what was created in the other programme - ie VS9 will only open VS9 projects and the same for VS7.

How can I configure VS9 to read MP4 and edit it without it crashing all the time; so that I can uninstall VS7SE? Is there a way to copy something from VS7.0SE setup to the VS9?

Please save me from insanity and throwing my computer and the digital camcorde through that closed window ... :x :x :x

Hi Sally,
I cannot use VS9 to edit; because it keeps crashing.
There could be many possible reasons for this... not the least being the project settings that you were using, but also other hardware or system software can cause problems. Read the sticky leading post on this board for guidance on how to set up VS9 for capture and editing. Also when asking for assistance give as much information as you can including fundamental details of your PC system.

VS9 should be able to manipulate projects that were built in VS7, ie it is backwards compatible in that sense.. but not vice versa.
AFAIK VS7 does not support MPG4, and VS9 needs the MPG4 Plugin found here... http://www.ulead.com/store/vs/runme.htm#recommend

Hope this helps a little

Hi George, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I didn't fully explain my problem last night, because it isn't one problem but many.

1. I use a Sanyo Xacti C1 that saves footage as MP4. For editing, I don't do a DV capture, but instead insert the memory card into my computer to copy files directly to my HD.
2. I already had VS9 installed on my computer (platform XP, 1Go RAM, 200 Go HD, P4... bought last Feb).
3. I tried using VS9 to edit but it doesn't recognise MP4.
4.I went to the Xacti forum to get advice and downloaded a software called MP4Cam2Avi which puts the MP2 file into an AVI container that should be recognised as AVI.
5. I go back to VS9 to edit (in AVI format), but it still doesn't recognise the files so I installed VS7 SE (software provided with the camcorder that can edit MP4). VS7 SE works, but it is too basic and anyway I've got VS9 that should logically be better...?
6. I open VS9 and now it recognises the AVI container. I start editing but it's one step forward and two back, because VS9 keeps crashing.
7. I saved what I did in VS9 and go to open it in VS7. VS7 won't open it.
8. I start again using VS7, but then want to insert a fade to black between two clips and can't. VS7 is too basic.

My question, therefore, is how to stop VS9 from crashing the whole time? Should I perhaps convert my MP4 files to a format other than AVI for editing but if so which one because I don't want to lose quality.
Neither do I see why I should have to buy an MP4 plug-in from Ulead, when I have only recently bought VS9 and have VS7 that edits MP2 but which project is not subsequently recognised in VS9 for further editing.

Are my explanations clear ... or like mud?

All suggestions much appreciated.
