Hi George, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I didn't fully explain my problem last night, because it isn't one problem but many.
1. I use a Sanyo Xacti C1 that saves footage as MP4. For editing, I don't do a DV capture, but instead insert the memory card into my computer to copy files directly to my HD.
2. I already had VS9 installed on my computer (platform XP, 1Go RAM, 200 Go HD, P4... bought last Feb).
3. I tried using VS9 to edit but it doesn't recognise MP4.
4.I went to the Xacti forum to get advice and downloaded a software called MP4Cam2Avi which puts the MP2 file into an AVI container that should be recognised as AVI.
5. I go back to VS9 to edit (in AVI format), but it still doesn't recognise the files so I installed VS7 SE (software provided with the camcorder that can edit MP4). VS7 SE works, but it is too basic and anyway I've got VS9 that should logically be better...?
6. I open VS9 and now it recognises the AVI container. I start editing but it's one step forward and two back, because VS9 keeps crashing.
7. I saved what I did in VS9 and go to open it in VS7. VS7 won't open it.
8. I start again using VS7, but then want to insert a fade to black between two clips and can't. VS7 is too basic.
My question, therefore, is how to stop VS9 from crashing the whole time? Should I perhaps convert my MP4 files to a format other than AVI for editing but if so which one because I don't want to lose quality.
Neither do I see why I should have to buy an MP4 plug-in from Ulead, when I have only recently bought VS9 and have VS7 that edits MP2 but which project is not subsequently recognised in VS9 for further editing.
Are my explanations clear ... or like mud?
All suggestions much appreciated.
Sally
