reflection

Post by rami1960 »

Hello,
I'm new to this software.
I would like to create a reflection at the bottom of an image, like it was done in the attached sample.
Image
What is the best way to do it?
Thanks
Rami

You could try the Reflection Layer Effect.

On your layer in the layers palette, double click on the layer to open the Layer Properties dialog. Select the "Layer Effects" tab. At the bottom of the list is a "reflection" option. Select the checkbox to turn on the effect. Then use the settings to adjust the position, and opacity of the effect.

Reflections are tricky critters to master. There is a lot of geometry involved. Getting the perspective and lighting right is also an issue. One other 'problem' is the viewing angle. ie if you are looking down on an object the reflection 'should' include details only seen from below. For example if you have a reflection of a car the reflection 'should' have details from below the car in the reflection.
I've looked for a one stop fix for reflections for a long time. It's a very complex problem that has so many variables that a compromise is nearly always the solution.

If you look at the test example I've included you will see that from above you can't see any under car detail. Yet in the reflection you 'should' be able to see some detail. You can't add data that you don't have. Perspective is also a problem. A simple mirror flip may have the front wheel aligned but the rear wheel will be way out. You can grab a layer handle on the mirror layer and pull the rear wheel up to meet the rear wheel. But that will leave the front bumper all out of whack. Plus other perspective issues.

My point being that unless you can photograph a 'real' reflection then you will have a lot of work to do on all but the simplest examples. It's a compromise. On your example a 'true' reflection shouldn't show details of the top of the object.

The problem of a 'dull' reflection could be solved with any number of editing steps.

regards
