I have tried searching for this topic / and on google etc - keep hearing about needing a capture card!
Tearing hair out! i am wanting to upload some camcorder footage ( which has been saved in-camera memory -not on usual SD card method ). I put in my mini-hdmi cable etc and ...PC..( windows 10 / VS 9 ) tells me nothing!!!
Do - i need a capture card? could of sworn i have uploaded in the distant past?
Please advice..one thing after another!!!
THANKS

Hi
You do not give much detail regarding the make and model of camera
Does the camera have a USB terminal?
Does the camera also have SD card ?
One of my cameras would not display / upload on board memory till I removed the SD card.
When I connect the camera via USB then it would show on computer as a removable drive, from that I could copy and paste the files to the pc

Re: Uploading into VS ( or PC ) via HDMI
HI Lata, thanks for quick reply.. have been trying all morning - been a whilst since last bothered with editing, but VS 9 - has re-invigorated me so to speak...im certain i would of downloaded via HDMI in the past although would often of used SD card as well.
My (aging ) camcorder,
Panasonic HDC-TM700
I have tried your advice re removing SD card. Just PC ( windows 10 - still trying to work out new features / or the re-jigged look of system )
My HDMI isnt USB? just in the back of PC..from camcord - mini hdmi i imagine. PC doesnt achnowledge it...as far as I can tell. And Capture via Videostudio is a loss to me! SD card not a problem.
So, yes, answers your question, camcorder has SD. ( has a USB terminal - not sure what you mean...i have a lead from camera into USB port )
Camcorder is able to save i think 32gb itself - and this is what im now trying to load off camcorder into PC ( onto desktop / or a folder - and then bring into VS ) ( or bring into VS directly ). Whichever..nothing shows up?

Re: Uploading into VS ( or PC ) via HDMI
Have you ever connected your TM700 to your PC ? do it just the same, no need for VS to transfer files.
You have that?

Re: Uploading into VS ( or PC ) via HDMI
Hi
I think you need to connect camera to pc using usb not hdmi
The camera comes with HD Writer AE 2.1 software, try using that to transfer files to pc.
I have a pana 900 but SD only, so I cannot test on board memory.
Brian owns a 700 series but don’t know if its on board memory or not, he may be ableto help.
I think hdmi is used to stream video to playback on tv

Re: Uploading into VS ( or PC ) via HDMI
...have downloaded via that USB - all good. Final question then...
Is it better to go directly into VS? or create a folder on my PC somewhere and then open VS and bring in?
Old skool - and i dunno..copying files..i just feel that the quality will go with every time you move a file / and i will also have to Smartrender as well ( assuming do that in the edit stage not in the capture stage )
Sorry for the questions..but wanted to get it sorted this time from the off.

Re: Uploading into VS ( or PC ) via HDMI
no need for VS to copy files. This is done by windows. If there was any lost quality by that copy than windows will report an error.
You better not copy those giga files to your desktop, place them in a folder in one of your "not" C disks.

Re: Uploading into VS ( or PC ) via HDMI
Hi
When you transfer files from the camera to your pc you are moving data, the files are not recoded, no changes to them so no loss in quality, exact copies
When you insert files to video studio virtual clips are used representing the files on the hard drive, similar to viewing thumbnails. Editing clips does not alter the files on the hard drive, the program being non destructive.
I would advise that you transfer the clips to a folder on your hard drive then import to Video Studio, library or timeline, there are a few methods but none are wrong, Its just personal preference,
