Do you have problems with any video file? or just "those" ?
What smart proxy does, it's making a low resolution COPY's of your originals (this could take a long time) once done, those copies are used for editing.
When you finished and out to render, VS takes your edits information and apply them on your original clips according to your rendering settings.
Your computer is faster and brainier than mine I think your culprit may lay in other factors running in the background.
Can you load a typical short clip for us to test.

Hi garjobo

Although you have Smart Proxy enabled, the files are only created when using HD files having a frame size greater than 720 x 480 / 576. (Proxy Settings)

Proxy files are created when

1 / Adding a file to the timeline.
2 / right clicking files on the timeline or library for Create Smart Proxy.
The process can be seen by viewing the proxy Queue Manager
Existing proxy files being listed vai the File Manager.

An icon will be placed on the timeline clip indicating proxy files have been created.

Thanks once again for replies.

Ok - so i right click and 'create proxy' - never done that before...you say it will take a long time. I have probably 300+ clips to bring into timeline/edit/attach transitions.

Is there not a way of creating proxy all at once.

And..just to be certain...even if i do this method...once all edited, my 50minute dvd is done....it's not problem at all?? to then simply create a dvd is it/ or - will this proxy business cause problems? Aware im not changing orginal etc -

Once again, thanks for your help. Glad that my PC isnt as useless or old as some of yours out there anyway!!

Just to clarify, although i on occasion use HD 1080P footage from my camcorder..more often than not my footage is a step below 1080...i recall -from memory figure of 1984 x just a step down - so i dont use as much SD card memory.

Hi
Just to clarify…
Adding Clips to the timeline will start the Proxy file Create process.
For existing clips already on the timeline you have to start the process by right click.
Shift + Click will select multiple adjacent clips.
The first clip on the timeline will have its proxy file created first, so when the first two are made (view Icon) start editing, By the time you have trimmed those the third should be done, and so on
Otherwise have a cuppa.

Once created see if editing and playback has improved.
Do you see a difference in Project Playback to Clip Playback.
Smart Proxy should help with Project Playback, that includes all edits.

am I just thick ? i ask the question because no matter how I read the replies to smartproxy it doesnt make sense. Its like a professor at quantum mechanics explaining something to a banana.

Question - I have 300 clips ( which are not edited yet and just been brought into VS ). I want to smartproxy all of these clips THEN bring each one into the timeline , one at a time, edit/trim and join together adding a transistion or whatever.

How do i do that?

I have right-cicked a clip in the timeline...create smartproxy...doesnt really do anything.

I see some of my clips ..some of them..have a small rectangle box ( like Lata shows in his reply ) but inside the small rectangle is what looks like another square/keyboard. Does that mean THAT clip has been smartproxed Just if so - tried bringing in clip to timeline, smartproxed and nothing happens.

Hi

1 / All clips that have had Proxy Files created will have that Icon showing on the clip.

2 / If you go to Settings - Smart Proxy Manager --Smart Proxy File Manager, The panel shows all proxy files having a similar name to the original clip / video file.

3 / With Smart Proxy enabled adding a clip to the timeline will have its proxyfile created automatically, assuming it has not been created earlier.

4 / Proxy Files are only created for video having a larger frame size than 720 x 480, this can be seen from Settings -- Smart Proxy Options.

5 / You can choose to create Proxy Files from clips within the library, Shift + Click to select multiple clips, when the icon shows they are ready to be used and edited on the timelines.

6 / If you right click to select Create Proxies and nothing happens and there is no icon, please check the frame size of your video files, does it conform to 4 above?

I don't know how to explain the process any other way.

Please read the user Guide, search for Proxy Files, maybe that explains it better

Hi garjobo

If Smart Proxy is enabled then continue editing your video files.
Start a new project, when you add files the proxy process will kick in and timeline playback should improve, be patient.

If you are still getting bogged down with this don’t struggle, reply to the post. We can think of some way to explain.

It may be your video files that are causing the poor playback so Smart Proxy may not be enough to help.
I don’t know if we asked for the details / properties of your video files, can you provide those.

Right Click a clip on the timeline and choose properties, what are they?

Lata -too helpful - thanks. Was going to just leave it there and stuggle on..but seeing as you did ask..properties are;

Ok, properties below are from a ( largeish clip, not edited ) brought into timeline. It has the 2nd little box on it, so assuming that is has been smartrendered etc - Some of my clips havent got the 2nd box on..despite clicking to do it...will it matter using some clips smart and some not edited together?

When i opened up VS today, it paused/circled for a long time...assuming thats a side effect of this process.

Ok - appreciate you looking at properties..ANYTHING you think i should change PLEASE LET ME KNOW...and i will do so, and then crack on with creating my videos once again.

THANKS as always.

Properties are;

FILE FORMAT - PAL HDMV
FILE SIZE - 161,712 KB ( 157MB )

Hi

They look bog standard AVCHD and identical to the files I use from my Panasonic 900Sd camcorder. What camera do you have?

I do find I need to use Smart Proxy when editing my video, although 50P versions seem to play better than 25fps.

Go to Settings Project Properties they should be the same as your video files properties.

Video Studio has two playback modes, Clip Playback plays the selected clip whereas Project Playback plays the entire timeline, it’s the later that Smart Proxy helps smooth playback. Notice the words adjacent to the play button.

Not to get confused there are two Smart processes, Smart Render and Smart Proxy, where clips do not show the icon, right click and view properties is the frame size 1920 x 1080 or smaller 720 x 576? Then right click to create proxy files.

No it does not matter editing a mix of proxy and non proxy files.

Smart Render is a process used when converting / rendering the project to a new video file via the Share options.

Try editing your video to see how it goes

Lata, camcorder is; an aging but reliable;

Panasonic SD700 Full HD 1920x1080p Camcorder ( tempted to upgrade..any recommandations feel free to advise )

Glad that my results are all clear and normal so to speak.

What is 50p ? in relation to 25frames ( which mine appear to be )

Tell me this, I have clicked Settings > enable smart proxy - all well and good. WHY then do my little clips ( sitting in a folder on the right-hand side awaiting me pulling them into timeline and edit ) ..why do they not automatically have that 2nd little box within a box in?

Some do and some dont. Even when i right-click on a box in timeline ( or in the folder on the right hand side ) some will have that 2nd little box and other never do?

I tried once again, bringing in clips ( with 2nd little box ), added a few transistions and low behold..still 'jerky' / skipping a bit..definately not smooth.

You have all my stats - you say yours is similar - so why is this happening? Smart proxy seems to do nothing for me.
