How to create box around text?

Post by Rick_R »

How do I create a box (or other shape) around text (or anything else)? I tried using the Rectangle Tool but it doesn't give me an option to have the inside of the box transparent, so it wipes out anything that would be surrounded by the box.

What I have right now is some text I added to a photo with the Text tool and then I flattened the image, so there is no vector layer. The image is grayscale.

I'm trying to do the equivalent of the rectangle (or other shape) comment tool in Adobe Reader, where you simply click the shape tool you want, then position the cursor at the start point and drag it to the end point.

Never mind -- I just found it. I'm using X8 and some of the symbols have changed. On the Materials palette under the background color there are 3 little boxes and the one all the way to the right has a checkerboard pattern. I though that was for swatches.

With the rectangle tool just change the Fill color to transparent (third button under the Fill color box). Make sure you have a suitable line width and choose a suitable Foreground color and draw your box. You can do this with any preset shape as well.

Second method for turning off the fill color if you already have the rectangle on the screen.

Once you have the rectangle on the canvas you can double click on the rectangle object in the layers palette to open the Vector Object Properties window. Then uncheck the fill box. It'll make the fill transparent.
