VideoStudio X8 keeps crashing on new laptop

Post by Chris B »

Hi. I have been trying to watch and edit some video and find that Video Studio X8 randomly crashes and dumps me out of the program. I can be moving the scrubber forward in Clip mode or clicking to the next Clip or just watching a Clip when I get an error msg saying it is trying to find the answer to the problem (and then knocks me out). Often, the video clip I am watching turns solid green, sometimes it flickers or has a lot of noise It is not consistent in any way so far as I can see. This happens both in Enlarged (near full screen) mode and when I just play as normal.

This is a new laptop and the video drivers are all updated (GeForce 960M). I am using Windows 10 64-bit and my Corel is also 64-bit. I have only recently started using this program, but did use Video Studio X4 until very recently on another computer. I have been able to create some video files, but haven't tried it that much. I mainly cut clips and intend to convert them soon after doing a little editing. Also, these files are off of a Sony camcorder and are MTS format.

As best I can tell, I have all the updates I should. My Corel version is 18.6.0.6 Ultimate.

Does anybody have an idea as to why this would be occurring and what to do to fix it? Thanks, in advance.

Did you get a disc with any software with the cam?
Install this, as it will most likely have the codec for the file type your cam produces and this may well help.

Otherwise, try working with some other file types, or convert the MTS files to say h264 mp4 files and try working with those and see if you have the same problem.

This will tell us if it is the programme/computer or the files.

We had the same problem this week-end.

We found the following link from Corel about the problem:
http://howto.corel.com/en/c/VideoStudio ... _or_Render

Basicly, they tell you to... reinstall. It worked for us.... :D

Hi, and thanks for responding.

Apparently, Windows 10 has native support for this camera so there are no drivers to load. I tried converting all the clips into a different format, as you suggested. In this case, I converted them to the default MP4 format and inserted that into the timeline. The file was huge (3.8 GB) since all the clips were now merged. Although it was now choppier to watch (disappointingly so, since I was hoping this laptop would be powerful enough to have smooth playback in cases like this), the video still played fine at first. Then, after I moved the scrubber around some, paused the video, and hit play again at random time, Corel stopped working again. I didn't see a green screen within Corel this time, but it doesn't always show up. I also tried playing the video using the Windows 10 default video app and it never glitched.

This definitely seems like something to do with Corel itself. I saw a link that mentioned a free upgrade to 8.5, but it looked like that was only for Windows 7 users or something. What is 8.5? I have had Corel check for updates and it finds nothing. I also can't seem to install SP3 for Video Studio, although I am not sure it is needed. I am at a loss. This is very frustrating.

Do you have any more ideas to try? Thanks.

Hmm. I hadn't yet seen the other posts suggesting a reinstall. I will try that.

Dear Chris,

The reinstall worked for us. I hope it will work for you (let us know )

I had the same confusion than you about the updates and version. If your version is 18.6.0.6, you have the most up-to-date.
I bought our VS only a few weeks ago and I don't have access to 8.5 (I also don't really understand...)
If you go on Corel site and the update tell you: " can not recognise version" and stop: it mean that you don't need it...

If you have version 18.6.0.6, that incorporates X8.5 (18.5.*.*). X8.5 was not really a full new version. It incorporated a patch that Corel issued to make X8 full compliant with Win 10, plus a couple of other things. Since then, of course, we have had the Microsoft update saga, and further hotfixes which brings us to 18.6.0.6...

Corel usually incorporate Service Packs etc into the server version used for downloads of the program. So if you only bought a few weeks ago, that version would already have been X8.5...
