AVCHD disk only plays title screen
I am having trouble with playing a DVD created with Video Studio Pro X7 after issues with Windows February updates.
I've uninstalled updates 3126587 & 3126593. I've installed the Corel patch for videostudio pro x7. The computer has been restarted.
After successfully creating a video using jpeg images and mpeg audio, a dvd was created using the AVCHD selection. When the disk is played the title screen works but I am unable to play the content. Here is a description of what happens: The disk is inserted into the player and the title screen appears (working properly), pressing the enter button to start the video only restarts the title screen. Pressing the play button has no effect, the title screen continues to play through it's cycles.
Before the February updates I created a video using the same type of content and the same share options. It works perfectly.
Do you think reinstalling the two windows updates will solve the problem?
If not, any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
The important question is what type of player you are using. AVCHD discs, while burnt to a standard DVD, will only play in a Blu-Ray player.

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
Hi Ken,
Yes, it is a Blu-Ray player.
The confusing thing is that I have created other disks in the same way and they have no problems playing. What is different this time, I do not know. I even tried creating a second disk thinking it may have been the disk, itself, that was the problem.

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
With the disk in your computer drive, is there video apart from the title in the STREAM sub-folder and does it play when you select an individual clip e.g. 00001.m2ts?

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
With the disk in the computer drive there are four items listed in the STREAM sub-folder:
00000 - The content of the created video
00001, 00002, 00003 all deal with the title
Each of them plays, video as well as title.

Do you think a re-installation of the software is going to be what's needed to correct this problem?

Hi
Are you burning to re-writable discs? otherwise you are gonna create a few coasters
Although not all players support re-writable discs.
Yes a re-install of the program would not harm.
You could uninstall the windows updates then when you install X7 it should run ok.
If it burns discs ok then re-install the windows updates and apply the X7 hot fix.

The program should run again, but does it burn good discs?

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
Hi Trevor,
I hope you can help because I have tried everything I can think of and have had no success. Before the February Microsoft updates videostudio Pro x7 was working just fine. When I finished the latest of the videos I have been creating, (number 15), I can not create a DVD using AVCHD that will play in a blueray player. I'm using the same DVD's as previously, +R's, and have created many coasters with them. The reason I am creating them in DVD format is so that other family members can also view them.
My latest attempt: I removed the Microsoft updates: 3126587 and 3126593 and uninstalled Videostudio Pro x7 using the uninstall feature from the control panel. I shut down the computer completely and restarted from scratch. After start-up I installed Videostudio Pro x7. Once it was installed I opened the video I was working with and attempted to create an AVCHD disk. During the preview of the created video I was unable to adjust the amount of time the background music played during the title screen. To fix this I downloaded service pack 1. This fixed the problem and I was able to adjust the background music for the title menu. I did not reinstall the Microsoft updates. I created another disk using AVCHD and had the same results.
There was only one other change made to this computer between the time usable disks were created and now. That was the use of a headset and the 'windows speech recognition' software located in the accessories file. I do not believe this could be the cause of the problem, but I mention it because it's the only other thing that was done between the time Videostudio worked and now.
As I mentioned in an earlier posting, the STREAM subfolder does contain the video. The problem is when the blueray player attempts to access this information it can not. Thinking it may be the blueray player, itself, I played disks that were previously made and they still work just fine.
Doing a system restore is not possible, my restore points do not go back far enough to return the computer to before the February Microsoft updates.
I've checked for driver updates and mine are already up to date.
The only other thing I can think of is to download Videostudio to another computer and see what happens.
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated !
Lauraly

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
One thing you might try would be to create an AVCHD 'folder' on the last page of the burning module, instead of burning an actual disc. You can then test that on a player like the freeware VLC Player, which can play these folders including the menu. Then you will be able to see if everything was OK with the "burn".
If it plays OK in VLC, you could then burn the folder to disc using a suite like Nero, Roxio or the cheaper Ashampoo Burning Studio. I am pretty sure the freeware ImgBurn can also burn such folders to disc.

"The reason I am creating them in DVD format is so that other family members can also view them"
To view them, you mean on a bluray player? In this case, why not use the bluray format which is perfectly supported on all bluray player (in bonus you could also use higher bitrates with bluray media than avchd (dvd media) = possible greater video quality)? The avchd is not well supported on all players and could cause problems. Many players are also compatible with avchd folder on SD card which is probably less prone to bitrate limitation...
Can you recreate the known avchd disk you made long ago that was working using the original old project (this will confirm that your setup installation is working as before in a snap)?
N.B. AVCHD are a kind of poor man bluray disk (or if you do not have a bluray burner). They requieres bluray player, or a computer with a bluray software that could read avchd disk and could possibly play on dvd drive on that computer. But what is the point if having a bluray software meaning probably the computer could also read bluray media, so why not using it?). Freeware like VLC does not always play well avchd menu (but will usually play the main content if played with menu disable). With the cost of bluray disk now, i dont understand the usefulness of creating AVCHD disk if you want to avoid problems. This standart was created while bluray disk were expensive and not easily available. If one of your family member only has dvd player, you must create standard dvd video disk instead.

Hi Lauraly
“Curious” comment “To view them, you mean on a bluray player? In this case, why not use the bluray format which is perfectly supported on all bluray player”
If you were burning discs for the family to view then I would have thought you would burn a DVD not AVCHD.
In the past did you burn standard DVD’s, and now simply hit the wrong option when choosing your disc type.
Avchd although burnt to standard dvd needs a Bluray Player
That still does not explain why the menu does not work, unless you are trying to playback on a DVD Player not BlurayPlayer.

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
Thank you for all your suggestions.
I chose AVCHD because the description says "Advanced Video Coding High Definition is the recommended format for saving high-definition videos to DVD discs. A standalone player or computer software player can be used for disc playback." The videos I am creating have still images as well as video taken with a high definition camera. I do not have a blueray burner on my computer so that is not an option. I did not create any discs using the DVD format. I would like them to all be created using the same format. Yes, I was playing them back on a blueray player.
I downloaded Videostudio to a laptop computer and was able to create a quick video in the AVCHD format. It's a slower processor but maybe I can use it to burn a usable disc.
There is obviously something changed in the first computer that will not permit it to create a usable product. I've tried uninstalling the Microsoft updates and reinstalling the videostudio program. I've checked for updated drivers and everything else I can think of. Until I am able to figure out what the change is or how it happened at least I have another computer to use.

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
Lauraly,
unless all your family members have a BlueRay player, it is pointless to create an AVCHD disc since they will only play on a BlueRay player. Since you want to have a single DVD format, you should choose the standard DVD and everybody can play that DVD.
THat AVCHD description is not quite correct since it seems to imply that an AVCHD disc can be played on any stand-alone player which is not true.

Re: AVCHD disk only plays title screen
The final decision concerning the inability to create an AVCHD disc with VideoStudio Pro X7 is that my software (after the February glitches/fixes) will not create a usable DVD. Corel support has been very nice concerning the issue and I have upgraded to VideoStudio X9. My suggestion to anyone experiencing this issue is to forget trying to fix your VideoStudio Pro X7, just upgrade. You'll save yourself a lot of time and trouble.
Thank you to everyone who tried to help with this software problem, I do appreciate all your help and suggestions.
