VideoStudio X8 rendering crash

Post by Gedryk »

Good afternoon,

My wife love making slideshow and take more and more video clips during our travels. It was time to go to the next level: I got Video Studio X8 pro for her as a gift.
After starting to follow some tutorial, we come against a wall: VS X8 is crashing in the middle of the project playback.
(just to let you understand our background... we are computer literate but not IT professionals  )

I tried all my best to help her: check for updates (compatibility win 10?), reading dozen of forums and sites with different keywords ... without any result... (everything that we tried failed...) :?
After further investigation, we found the following:
- The project crash just before (or during) the reading of a video (format MP4).
- The project stop crashing if we remove the video. VS X8 can read the video clip on his own without crashing. (As you understand, we didn't buy VS to end up making slideshow without video...)

After consulting your (very interesting) forum, I wonder if the solution of changing the format of our video could help (through a third party software) ?
The problem is definitely beyond my profane knowledge in video editing... This why I turn my hope to the community of this excellent forum.

Here are some data:

System: (laptop)
Windows 10
AMD A8-6410 2Ghz
AMD Radeon R5
8 Gb RAM
1Tb HD

Video Studio X8 Pro (v 18.6.0.6)

Project properties :
24bits,720X480
29.97 fps
frame based
DVD-NTSC, 19:9
Video data rate: variable

I hope you will be able to help us...

Where did you buy the video camera - here in the UK ? - then it almost certainly records a PAL format - why are you converting to NTSC are you sending the DVD abroad ?

is it a widescreen High Def video - your properties are hopelessly adrift - could be the cause of your problem

Please put your video in the timeline of Videostudio and RIGHT click over it and choose 'properties' from the pop-out = copy those properties (screen shot) and post here and then we can see what you have and what your project properties should be

FOR INSTANCE - with a video direct from my camera I have

MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 16800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

and to burn a "standard" DVD (not HD or blu-ray ) for use in the UK I would use

MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 16800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

let us know about your video - then we can guide you

Dear Brian,

Many thanks for your reply.

Here are the print screens:
Video Properties
Video Properties
Project Properties
Project Properties
To be honest, Lorraine (my wife) was still at the basics:
add pictures and videos in the timeline + music and titles (like you would do in a free software like Movie Maker). We probably need to learn the jargon and the ABC of proper video editing...

Everything works fine as long we remove the video clips.

What you tell us already make sense: Would you have advise and/or a tutorial where we could learn how to start a basic project and growing step by step in world of video editing?
To come back at the root of this post: do you see something wrong in the properties which could explain the crash of VS X8 ?

Many thanks for your help. :D

One other thing you could try is this: first, check in Preferences > General and make sure the box beside "Show Message when inserting first video clip" is ticked. Then start a new project. Before anything else, insert one of your mp4 clips into the timeline. You should get a message asking if you want the Project Properties to match those of the clip, which you say yes to. You can then remove the clip, and insert the photos and clips in the order you want.

You haven't actually said what you were intending to produce: a standard definition DVD, a Blu-Ray disc, or just a video file which you can play on a HDTV from a USB drive. But anyway, your next step should be to produce a new video clip of your whole project. To do this, go to Share and at the very top of the page which appears tick the box beside 'Same As Project Settings". Give the new clip a name and press the blue START button. A new clip should then be produced and hopefully there will be no crashes. You can also play it on a software player to make sure everything is OK.

Once you have that clip, you can then use it to produce any of the above types of output: i.e. downconvert it to make a standard def DVD, use it as is to make a Blu-Ray disc, or simply transfer it to a USB drive which you can plug directly into a newer HDTV than can play video from such a drive, or else plug the drive into a Blu-Ray player which is connected to your HDTV via HDMI cable.

There are many resources available to learn basic and advanced video editing, Corels Discovery Centre is a good place to start, also Gripps2211 YouTube channel has many tutorials for Video Studio which explain project construction in a very easy to understand manner

Happy Sunday everyone,

I have to apologise, I used the wrong vocabulary (Up to the admin if they want to change the title of the thread, or divide ...)

I followed Ken's advise and realised that it is the project playback not working, the rendering is absolutely fine.

I made a new project (checked the preference to get the message about the properties) including a beginning template, a few pictures, a few video clips and music in the background.

If I play back by Clip: perfect. If I try to playback as a Project: it crash (100% of the time) a bit before the video (or during the video...it is a bit random even if it is always in the same area of the time line).

I also noted the following: If I play with the option "project", purple and green lines appear at the bottom (not in "clip". The image is perfect)

I tried to save my project in MPEG-4: perfect. The rendering works fine. 8)

As you can imagine, it is difficult to make a project without the opportunity to try it out before rendering. ( for example, playback by clip doesn't include the music)

I have the feeling that a quick fix must exist... I will continue my search.

I hope that our problems make more sense to all of you...

EDIT:
After some search with the right key words (Playback , Crash) , I came straight on the site of Corel where they explain to uninstall VS if the playback (or the rendering...) crash. I just did it: problem solved!
I suppose the admin can close the topic. A lot of thanks for your help and your support.
