How to Align Two Layers?

Post by PianoAl »

In this image, I want to center the author name horizontally on the front page. That is, between the salmon-colored lines.

Image

Is there any way to do that other than by eyeball?

I created a layer that fills that area. If I could align the author name with that, I'd be set.

Thanks,

Al

Since version X2 or X3 (I can't remember which) you can now use the Objects menu to align, distribute, and resize, any layer type not just vector objects.

Select both layers.

Then under the Objects menu select "Align -> Top" to align the tops then "Align -> Left" To align the left most portions.

Hi PianoAl,
the Align feature in PSP is only working between image borders.
There is no possibility to align "inside a part of an image", between Guides, for example.

EDIT: I feel like an idiot I got it now.

Jean-Luc is correct. Essentially the way align works is you can either align two layers to each other, or you can align a layer to the canvas. In the case of what you're trying to do you need to align the text to the image that is between the salmon colored borders. You can align the text using the Align Horizontal Center option. First select the cover image that fills in the area of the salmon colored border. Then CTRL + Click to select the text layer. You must select the text layer second for this to work.

Then go to Objects -> Align -> Horizontal Center. This will center the text on the cover image. And so long as the image is properly centered in the borders the text will be too.

There are of course other cheats you can do. Since alignment can work between layers you just need a layer that is exactly the same size and position as the cover areas between the salmon colored borders. Then you can align anything to these layers.

Thanks, Guys.

Yes, the layer that has the text "-- USE FOR ALIGNMENT --" has the horizontal borders I want to align the author name to.

So, how do I align the author name to it? IOW, how do I align two layers?

Thanks,

Al

A workaround...
Place a Guide on the left side and right side of the image (blue lines on my screenshot).
If you right-click on the little blue rectangle on top of each line, you will see the exact pixel position.
So, you may calculate the exact middle position of the third guide.
Now, set the setting of the guide to "Snap".
Create your text and move it on the third line. When you approach the middle, the text will snap exactly in the center.

That is an excellent option Jean-Luc and I think guides often aren't used well enough. However, they are overkill for this.

Seriously, just use the Align commands. They are found under the "Objects" menu.

Here's a video of what I'm talking about.

As you can see all you have to do is select the "Use for alignment" layer, then Shift + Click or CTRL + Click (depending on your version) to select the text layer. Finally go to "Objects -> Align -> Horizontal Alignment" and it'll align itself.

Okay, got it. That's what I was looking for. When I had used Shift-Click to select the second layer, I thought it was making a new, single layer.

Thanks for being patient!
