Moving project to later version of VS

Post by Skipper »

:D All answers are obvious to wise people but I cannot seem to open an incomplete project from VS X8U into just purchased X9U
Is it possible and if so, how?
Thanks in advance for any help on this puzzle

Go to File, Open Project, Documents folder opens, then open folder Corel Video Studio Pro, open folder My Projects, there you will find all your .vsp files, highlight the one you want to import, then select Open, your VSX8 project should now be in the VSX9 timeline

Thanks Robo. Short answer - yes it worked (this time) I had gone down the same path without any result so quickly despaired.
A background update: I recently changed from Win 7 64 bit to Win 10 64 bit and this was my first excursion into video editing since, also made the plunge and purchased X9U.
Having no quick fix to the problem I thought, I continued to completion of the video in X8U then attempted to burn a BR disc -no, it stops (fails) at 81% rendered each time (tried 3 times)
So, when I saw your reply, loaded the completed video into "now working" X9U and tried to burn BR disc, and would you believe it, the program fails (still) at 81% of a total file size of 2.57GB!
I am thinking this is some quirk of Win 10?
Any thoughts from anyone gratefully received - I need this completed by Saturday if at all possible

Much more likely to be something in your project which is not converting correctly - especially if it happens in the same place in both versions

what.s in your timeline about 81% of the way through the project

rather than keep trying to make discs direct why not render out an mp4 video first and see if you can do that - if you can we stand a chance - if you can't even make a video then you stand no chance with a disc unless you remove the offending clip

Brian -a good thought - I have a .jpg still photo at somewhere near 80% of the video on the timeline
It has fade in and out on either side and this has all been entered on the second video line is there anything wrong in doing this?
It plays normally when reviewing the video in VS and I have done similar things previously
Please excuse my ignorance, I have plenty to learn. Skipper

No there shouldn't be any problems with images in overlay tracks with fades on - some people complain that 20 overlay tracks is not enough they manage to pile 20 odd images on screen at one time without problems

Can you confirm that when you say you load the completed video, you mean you load the completed *project* i.e. the vsp file, into the burning module?

If this is what you do, first try -- as Brian has already suggested -- to first convert the project into a Blu-Ray compliant file: that could be either an AVCHD (.m2ts) or high def mpeg-2. If you then get a new video from this in the Editing module, you open the Burning Module and insert that new clip -- and NOT the vsp -- into the burning timeline. Also click on the cogwheel Options icon in the bottom left of the burning screen and make sure that the box beside "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" is ticked. This will ensure no second conversion takes place as part of the burning process.

Another thing you could try to avoid making coasters would be to make a Blu-Ray folder or ISO instead. That way you could also first play the completed video to make sure everything is there the way you want it. Then you could burn it to disc. If it's an ISO, then VS itself has a tool to burn it to disc. If it's a folder then a program like Nero or Roxio will do it, or there is a free program called ImgBurn which will do it as well.

I loaded the complete "project" (.VSP file) into the editing mode of X9U then clicked "share", waited a minute and a half for the new screen to change, selected DVD then Blu-Ray.
Having then set up a simple title page menu without chapters I clicked I think it is labeled "start" and waited for it to render the project
Some 9 minutes later and 81% into the job "Windows" said that VS had stopped working and I needed to close the application.
I am mystified as to what clip may be offending since there is nothing unusual about anything that I can see
The photo on the overlay track is a .jpeg c/w fade in and out plus some basic motion to make the photo seem "live"
And as far as I can tell there is no obvious way to identify the which clip (or photo) other than one by one dismantling the video and testing till it works
My first try will be your advise to create a new HD mpeg-2 file (assuming I understand you correctly)
I sincerely appreciate your comments and will persevere as the video has particular sentimental value at this time to our family

Gentlemen, I have followed your advice without success, then did a complete rebuild of the project such was my desire to make it work. The problems just got worse! Many hours wasted but I suppose that is the nature of our hobby? And no, the issue is not with my video files as I have previously successfully used the same files to make a slightly different version of my project, at that time using VS X8U and the old Win 7 operating system. So I am now convinced it is a problem between Win 10 and VS X9U. My PC does automatic updates for Windows so I am not aware just what takes place or when in that regard, however, I had been using VS X8U prior to upgrading to Win 10 and had a perfectly stable editing program which almost never crashed (perhaps twice in the previous 12 months?) I had taken a break from editing and it was not until Win 10 had been installed that I tried video editing using the "old" VS X8U that I first encountered any issue. Not to be put off I paid for and downloaded VS X9U thinking this may have any "fixes" for Win 10 but now it seems this is not so. Just your header topics imply there is no fix for electronic version? Is this the case?
I even tried Corel Tech Support (someone called John) who just directed me back to the forum - what are they on - drugs or something, I mean why do they exist if not to provide help? I understand you good gentlemen give freely of your time and for that I am most appreciative.
My video camera is a Canon Legria HF G30 and I shoot at 50 frames per second with files being saved as .M2t or .MTS Not sure why the variation but there are two types on my PC if one is to believe the detailed file info. The files in current issue are all .MTS

As a final note on this subject, I did a complete re-install of VS X9, then re-built my project and it all works! I have experienced no further issues with X9 and was able to make the movie and burn both BD and DVD's that play.
So, I think Corel Tech support is a waste of space if my experience is anything to go on, the only thing I did learn from John is that they cannot leave a "ticket" open without activity for more than a day so they close it for want of any worthwhile contribution. All forum suggestions were gratefully received but in this instance a program re-install did the trick. Regards Skipper
